What information is kept across offices for MBB reapplicants?

So I‘ve applied twice to a regional MBB office in Asia, the first I didn’t secure interviews, the second I did but didn’t get an offer.

I got into a top US MBA and will be applying to these firms in the US. Will the US offices know how many times I‘ve applied and will they have access to my previous applications / interview feedback in Asia?

As a seasoned strategy consultant, I can provide some insights into your situation. Typically, consulting firms maintain an internal database where they keep track of past applications and decisions. This means that if you have applied to a regional MBB office in Asia in the past, there is a possibility that this information may be stored in their system.

However, it's important to note that the level of visibility and access to this information may vary across different offices and regions. While US offices may have access to some information about your previous applications, such as the fact that you have applied before, the specific details, such as interview feedback, may not always be readily available to the recruiting team.

It's important to approach your new applications as fresh opportunities. Focus on highlighting your achievements, skills, and experiences gained during your top US MBA program. Emphasize how these experiences have prepared you for a role as a strategy consultant and demonstrate your enthusiasm and commitment to the firm.

If you have any concerns or would like more specific information about the policies and practices of the US offices, I would recommend reaching out to the recruiting team directly. They will be able to provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding the visibility of your previous applications and interview feedback.

Remember, each application is a chance to showcase your abilities and fit for the role. Stay positive, leverage your MBA experience, and present yourself as a strong candidate for the US offices. Best of luck with your applications!

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, consulting firms typically maintain an internal database where they keep track of past applications and decisions. This means that if you applied in the past and there was specific feedback, it might be stored in this system.
  • Moreover, while not every detail might be visible, crucial feedback or particular concerns that were raised in past applications can sometimes be accessible to the recruiting team.
  • Lastly, I would advise you to approach every application as a new opportunity. Even if there was feedback from past applications, what matters most is your growth in the meantime and your current performance.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Congrats on getting into a top US MBA!

You are fine. What I mean is, your application should be treated individually.

While they can see you have applied before, your “fresh start” with the MBA is unlikely to work against you.

Additionally, in the interview itself, you just have to prove yourself then and then.

Highly highly recommend you get a coach this time around to make it count!

Hi there,

Q: Will the US offices know how many times I‘ve applied and will they have access to my previous applications / interview feedback in Asia?

The US offices will probably know that you applied before but that depends on how connected the firm’s HR is globally. In any case, studying at a top MBA program in the US will increase your chances of getting an interview.

Hi there!

It depends on the firm and the region, but by default you can rather assume that they don't have this overview.

The most integrated systems I've heard that can track this are with McKinsey and even there they mostly function at regional, not global level.

Even so, it's absolutely normal to try multiple times and it's not something they'll hold against you. The opposite actually. Often the interviewers themselves applied multiple times.

If you're applying at the moment, sharing with a guide on how to approach the application process:

Best,
Cristian

Interviewer feedback is not stored, just turndown/hire decision, no details though. Hence, do not worry. Best of luck this time!

Hi there,

Recruiting process are typically global, meaning that Recruting team know you have applied before and the result.

Interviewers have no access to previous feedback and even have no access to feedback of previous interviews within the same recruiting process. MBB try to prevent interviewers to be biased in any form.

Good luck!

Alberto

A new application is a new application. HR will now you applied before. Interviewers will not. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
