What % of analysts/associates get counselled out at MBB?

Hi guys, what % of entry level analysts tend to get counselled out at MBB? How soon does this typically happen?

I just want to make sure I'm applying with my eyes wide open and know what I'm trying to get into. Thanks!

It's a very low number prior to EM, I really would not worry about it. People that were counseled to leave genuinely did not put in much effort at their job and were not open to feedback. If you are open to feedback and can grow as an individual you will not be asked to leave. After EM it is a bit of a different ball game as you need to ‘sell’ yourself and the firm a bit more and then it becomes about finding a practice you want to be with and a set of mentors willing to promote you to partner over time etc.

Hi there,

Hard to say exactly, and it truly depends on the office/country and the time period.

Generally, you find most people that do leave do so because they just realized they don't like the job (or prefer something else).

If you have the stamina and truly want it, you can normally make it through. We had an old joke that the Partners were more “survivors” than anything! (Not to say we didn't have supreme respect for them of course)

Hello,

At McKinsey it was very office-dependent. Perhaps we could give a bit more clarity if you share what offices/geographic region you are looking to apply for? In most US offices being counselled out is quite rare at entry level, as long as you did your work properly and didn't commit any offenses. It is by far more common for people to leave of their own volition, as Ian pointed out.

Average tenure in consulting is about 2-3 years. About 25% of people leave each year. Not all of these are counselled out, most people leave by their own option (although some of these leave because things are not working out so well…).

So I don't have specific percentages, and these depend on office and how the business is going (and how many people joined and left in the previous years).

So if you are looking for a stable job, this is not one. Yes, there is a chance you get counselled out, and many great people do every year.

With MBBs growing year-on-year, very few (low single digits in percentage). At McKinsey, its also very difficult to be asked to leave at the early levels pre-EM as long as you’re taking on the feedback you’re getting. At a more senior level, it becomes more about your client platform which I personally would say can be more outside your control.
