Solution associate at Sustainability Insights ?

I am looking for some insights about what the job of solution associate at McKinsey (sustainability insights) is really about - based on the job offer it seems that the focus is more on background work and supporting “real” consultants but what is also mentioned is that working with clients can take up to 50% of the time. I am wondering if this job includes facing the client, travelling, long working hours etc. or is it rather slow-paced office job ? It would be also great to know if I should expect standard case interviews in the process, right now I am just after online game and before 30min chat with the recruiter, but I would love to know if I need to start practicing cases already now.

thanks for any support!

Hi Marcin,

The job includes a bit of both. You will get staffed on client cases alongside generalist consultants, as well as work on internal projects, research and materials from within the Sustainability Practice.

You can expect long working hours and travelling when you'll be staffed on client cases, but outside of that it should resemble more so the working hours of a regular job.

I've been working in the past couple of weeks with two other candidates applying within the Sustainability practice and all of them have been told that the cases will not be sustainability focused. So do practice across all industries and topics to be prepared for the interview.

And do reach out if you have any questions.

Best,

Cristian

Hey there,

I believe it's similar to a typical expert role.

Your work will be a mixture of:

  • Supporting several teams with input, expertise, analysis, and research during some weeks
  • Being staffed full time on a project with a team for several weeks / months
  • Working on industry research and knowledge development pieces
  • Working on proposals for new clients and engagements

The process should be the same as for a generalist consulting role (cases + PEIs), plus potentially a TEI as well. However, should notify you in due time about the exact process and evaluation elements.

For your preparation, check out the articles I wrote on these topics:

All the best!

Hi,

Your summary of a solutions associate role is more or less accurate. To start off, a lot of your work will be supporting teams on their projects and providing data and other analytical solutions they need. As you get more experienced you will likely be staffed on the teams as a full resource but you will still be paid as a solutions associate and not a generalist associate.

The process can vary a lot by team - did the recruiter mention what the process was?

Best,

Udayan

Hello!

I know people in that role and indeed they are very very involved with their solutions in client-facing job -although I guess this depends also on the solution you will be working on.

Cheers,

Clara
