Reference

Hello

I'd like to ask about the reference that MBB firms would ask for from my previous employer. Do they ask about the time frame that I was in X company or do they just confirm my presence?

My issue being is that in my previous company I was there for 23 months rather than 24 months so, I just wrote it down as 2 years on my CV.  I already got an offer from BCG, Oliver Wyman and Mckinsey.

Thanks in advance!

Hello!

Been there too!

They only want to make sure that you indeed were there. Nothing else, no minor details are relevant here.

It´s more about things like "I went to HBS" and then there are no records (yes, like in SUITS).

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

I wouldn't worry about that 1 month small gap. It is mostly to confirm you have worked in that company.

I have been reference for many of my ex-colleauges, and none of the calls I received asked for such detials. :)

Best,

Emily

If you already did get the offer, they might use the reference to confirm you have worked where you claim you have worked. Unless you gave wrong information about the exact time (incl. months) and the 2-year threshold is somewhat critical (e.g. some working permits are conditional to the fact that you have a minimum amount of working experience), this will not be an issue.

McKinsey offers w/o final round interviews - 100% risk-free - 10+ years MBB coaching experience - Multiple book author

Hi Anonymous,

It's actually rare that MBB reaches out to previous employers particularly AFTER you have received offers - unless there is reasonable doubt about your credentials. (once you delivered your performance during your interviews, nobody really cares about the specifics of your application documents since you already delivered...).

In any case, a slight "rounding" from 23 months to 2 years won't be perceived as critical, so don't worry abou that.

Hope that helps - if so, please be so kind to give it a thumbs-up with the green upvote button below!

Hi there,

You're totally fine! No need at all to worry - I promise!

Rest assured that you now have the very awesome problem of having to choose between 3 offers :)
