I wouldn’t worry about HR being offended. If Bain wants to hire you, this is useful information for them to know.

The first question I'd ask myself is: how hard is that deadline, really?

If the other offer genuinely expires on Friday and they won't grant an extension, then you need to protect yourself.

Also, what is the practical cost of accepting the other offer and later changing your mind if Bain & Company comes back with a positive decision?

In some geographies and industries, that's considered very poor form. In others, while not ideal, it's actually quite common and companies know it happens.

Personally, I wouldn't put myself in a position where I lose a good offer while waiting for another process with an uncertain outcome.

So my recommendation would be:

1. Clarify whether the other deadline is truly firm.
2. Assess the real downside of accepting now and potentially changing your mind later.
3. Make the decision that maximizes your options.

It may not be the most elegant solution, but depending on the geography, accepting one offer and later withdrawing if your preferred option materializes is not uncommon and is sometimes the rational thing to do.
