McKinsey - Problem Solving Scenario - level 2

Hi,

I have a 2nd round of interviews at McK for Product Manager position. I just got an email that I'll have PSS (Problem Solving Scenario) interview. I asked what's the difference between PSS and traditional business case and I got an answer that the PSS have depth on level 2, not level 3 as typical business cases. What does that mean? 😉

Does anybody have any examples of such case?

Hi there,

Caveat: This is my understanding from some research/googling.

Level 2 vs Level 3 in McKinsey's Problem Solving Scenario (PSS) interview refers to the level of analysis required to solve the business case.

Level 2 refers to an analysis that goes beyond surface level observations and requires a deeper understanding of the business issue and potential solutions. It requires the ability to synthesize information and apply frameworks to arrive at recommendations.

Level 3 refers to the highest level of analysis, where the candidate is expected to demonstrate not only a deep understanding of the business issue, but also an ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions.

So when your interviewer says that the PSS will have a "depth on level 2, not level 3 as typical business cases", it means that the case you will be working on will require a deeper understanding of the business issue, but not necessarily expect you to come up with a highly innovative solution.

The main goal of the PSS is to assess your problem-solving skills and how you approach complex business situations, so be prepared to apply your analytical and critical thinking skills.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation by McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • From my understanding, based on what I found online, the PSS interview focuses more on your business acumen rather than a regular case study interview, but focuses less on the creative aspect of a case study.
  • Still, I would highly advise you to reach out to the recruiter for clarification, as we can only provide assumptions and vague ideas.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
