you should send the below email to HR:

Dear McKinsey Team, (or actual name if you know)

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to follow up on my application and check whether there are any updates following the completion of my Solve assessment.

I remain very enthusiastic about the opportunity to join McKinsey and am genuinely excited about the possibility of contributing to the team. I would also like to transparently mention that I am currently progressing through interview processes at a few other firms, with decisions expected in the coming weeks. That said, McKinsey is my top preference, and I would love to align timelines if at all possible.

Please let me know if there is any additional information I can provide to support the process. I truly appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Completely understand why you'd be anxious after three weeks – the waiting game is definitely one of the toughest parts of this process.

Here's the reality: it's not uncommon for there to be a significant delay after the Solve game. McKinsey receives an enormous volume of applications, and the Solve assessment itself is designed to filter a huge pool. HR teams often batch candidates, meaning they might wait until a certain number of applicants have completed the game or until they've processed a specific cohort before sending out the next round of communications. This isn't always a linear, instantaneous process.

Given it's been three weeks, you could consider a very polite, brief follow-up email to HR just to confirm receipt and inquire about the general timeline, but be prepared for a generic response or continued silence. Your focus should be on preparing for the next stage if and when it comes, or pivoting to other applications.

Hope this helps clarify things a bit. All the best!

Hi there,

Yes, this can be normal. For McKinsey, especially outside of structured campus timelines, it can take anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks to hear back after the Solve assessment. Sometimes offices review results in batches, and timing depends on hiring demand and interviewer availability.

If it’s been exactly three weeks, you’re still within a reasonable window. If you don’t hear anything after about four weeks, it’s perfectly fine to send a short, polite follow-up to the recruiter asking whether there’s an update on your application status.

Silence at this stage doesn’t automatically mean rejection.

Happy to help you prep – feel free to reach out

Three weeks is a bit long but not necessarily bad news. Some offices release results in batches, not one by one. They might be waiting to have enough candidates to move forward. Could just be delays on the recruiting side

What I would do

Check your application portal. If it still says "in progress," you are probably still in the running. If something went wrong, the status usually updates to reflect that.

Send a short follow-up to your recruiter. Something like "Hi, I completed the Solve three weeks ago and wanted to check if there are any updates on next steps." Keep it polite and short.

One thing to remember

Different offices move at different speeds. Some respond in a week, others take a month. Your office may just be slower than what you read online.

Keep preparing in the meantime. If you move forward, interviews get scheduled fast.

Hey!

Yes, totally normal - from McKinsey Solve to HR screen you can wait 3–6 weeks (holidays, batch processing, recruiter bandwidth).
Personal experience: Last year I waited for 3 weeks, then got HR interview invite. Ping politely if 4 weeks (“Checking status post-Solve”).
They’re still interested - radio silence is not rejection. Many get calls at week 4–5.

Hey!

In short: can be normal! But send a nice follow-up / call HR.

It can take up to a month.

It's more of an exception if it takes longer.

So wait for another week and if you don't hear back from them, send a polite follow-up to the recruiter asking them for an update.

Best,

Cristian
