MBA vs Masters in Management Analytics for MBB Canada?

So straight out of university, I managed to join a major tech consulting firm and I have acquired 2 years of experience until now. I would like to do my masters. While I know the MBA is the way to go, do you think a masters in Management analytics would also be appreciated at the MBB’s. Most MBA programs require more years of experience then I’ve acquired. so maybe do my masters in management analytics then join the one of the MBB’s and let them sponsor me for an MBA from a top school or perhaps an ivy leagye? Do you think that’s a good plan?

Hi there,

First, please be careful making your end goal MBB. The odds that this happens are not high enough to pin all your hopres and dreams and many many years for just 3 firm. Period. For anyone. Shoot for the moon, of course! But, also remember you might end up in a boutique consulting firm, or a tier 2. Set expectations now for this.

If your end goal is MBB, your best shot is the MBA. Plain and simply.

A Master's in Analytics is not any more desired by MBB than a Masters in Engineering. Remember, your degree tells them your interests! A Master's in Analytics means you like…analytics! It means you're going for BCG GAMMA or McKinsey BLACK or a ton of analytics-based firms (Quantium, Palantir, etc.) NOT generalist consulting.

Please please do your masters based on what you want to actually do. And keep this general, not firm specific.

You did not seem to understand me question. My end goal is not MBB however It is my next step that I wish to pursue. I just wanted to know if a Masters in Management Analytics is desirable to the MBB's. Would it be impressive if I were to apply to mckinsey for instance to the BA role with 3 years of consulting experience + a good masters? because I can't seem to find a good mea program that I can currently enroll in.

Next step = MBB is same as end goal MBB....my answer still holds. Do not make all of your plans just for 3 firms. My answer is also still the same - a master's in analytics is not something that will "impress" them. An MBA is the most direct path.

Hi there,

If the goal is to join MBB, I would not recommend a Master in Management Analytics now, which most likely will lead you to join with the same position you could have now if successful.

Instead, I would recommend the following:

  1. Apply to MBB via referral - you can find some tips on referrals here
  2. If that doesn’t work, work for a few more years. You can apply to Tier 2 as well to get more relevant work experience
  3. Apply and complete a top MBA
  4. Apply again after the MBA
  5. If that doesn’t work, work for a few more years
  6. Apply again as an experienced hire

In this way, you will have three attempts and maximize the chances to get an offer.

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi,

From reading what you wrote - it's not entirely clear to me what your goal is - whether its MBA or MBB.

If your end goal is to join MBB, my take would be to focus on getting into a top MBA and then recruiting on campus for MBB.

Could you do MiM → MBB → MBA? Sure, that's not impossible. But if you wanted MBB, you'd already be there if you recruited into MBB, so then why need to do an MBA after getting into MBB?

And if MBB is a stepping stone for MBA (because you are worried that your current employer does not place into top bschools), then why not just apply directly now as a lateral hire, rather than going to MiM?

Hard to give more tangible guidance without knowing the specifics of your experience and also goals etc.

Competition is fairly high in Canada so I was hopping to get a MIM from a top business school then apply for McKinsey for instance as a BA or Junior Associate then get them to sponsor me for an executive MBA 2-3 years in.

Hi there,

Yes, the plan works.

Though I'd question WHY you want to do the masters in the first place.

If it's just a personal preference, then go for it, but it's not a pre-requisite for joining a consulting firm.

You could also just apply for consulting roles and have the firm then sponsor an MBA directly in a couple of years from now.

Best,
Cristian

Hello,

A Masters in Management Analytics from a reputable school would look solid on your resume, but is certainly not required and honestly probably wouldn't give you a huge advantage if the goal is MBB.

I think it would be worthwhile to reflect on what your end goal is here. Is it MBB? Is it getting a masters? Is it getting an MBA? I would think of your plan in light of that.
