Consulting Consulting

I have a Bain interview coming up in three weeks. I have a PhD in natural sciences and no business background, so I’m looking for tips, preparation strategies, and advice on how to perform well in the interviews.

Hi,

I have an upcoming Bain interview in three weeks for a Consultant role. I have a PhD in Chemistry but no business or consulting background.

How should I best prepare over the next three weeks? Do I need to learn business terminology and frameworks from scratch, or should I focus mainly on case interview practice? I’d appreciate any tips or strategies to perform well given my scientific background.

Thank you!

Hi there,

Congrats on the interview. First, your PhD is an asset, not a gap. You already know how to form a hypothesis, test it with data and draw a conclusion, and that’s a big part of what a case is. What you need now is to apply it in a business context.

Here are my thoughts:

1. Learn the basics and the key frameworks
Get comfortable with the core concepts: revenue, costs, profit, margins, market share and customer segments. Then understand the key frameworks and learn how to tailor them to each case. The profitability, market entry and M&A frameworks are a good place to start, since they cover a large share of the problems you’ll see.

A very helpful resource is Victor Cheng. His case interview video series, around 12 hours, covers hypotheses, frameworks and structuring with good examples for free on Youtube. I highly recommend watching it.

2. Spend most of your time on cases
A rough plan for 3 weeks:

  1. Week 1: cover the basics and frameworks, and solve 8 to 10 cases, a few on your own and the rest with partners.
  2. Week 2: do live cases with partners, and try to fit in a few sessions with someone experienced, like a former consultant or a coach. With only three weeks, that’s the fastest way to spot your gaps and get the feedback you need.
  3. Week 3: fix your weak spots, sharpen your mental math, and do a couple of mock interviews under real conditions.

3. Don’t neglect the fit interview
Bain cares a lot about fit. Prepare a strong answer to why consulting after a PhD, and build 3 to 4 stories from your research, such as leading a project, handling a setback, or explaining complex work to non experts. That last one is gold for consulting.

4. Translate your PhD into business language
Don’t talk about the science, talk about the impact: “I managed a 3 year project, coordinated with 4 labs, and delivered results on time.” That’s the language interviewers connect with.

Three weeks is tight but very doable if you stay focused. Good luck.

Best,
Hatem
