DUBAI -- McKinsey vs BCG

Generally speaking, all MBB are supposed to be created equal. In North America for example I don't think I've seen a preference when it comes to MBB.

However. In Dubai, does either of those have an edge over the other? I've heard unverified information that BCG has a solid reputation among the region's governments and as such it has the best exposure in the region. As I said this is unverified, so I'm not really sure.

I still haven't had offers yet but I'd like to have an idea. Appreciate your help!

Hi there,

Generally speaking, you can't really go wrong with either choice - both very strong in the region with regards to footprint, growth, staff count, industry exposure etc.

Having worked with BCG in Dubai, I can confirm that the strength in public sector in the region is probably second to no other consulting firm, esp. after McK's rather recent case of negative publicity in KSA.

That said, if you were in a position to choose among the 2, don't focus too much on the reputation - both firms can offer top-notch exposure in that respect. Rather select based on which culture / people you can affiliate more to - here the 2 firms vary quite a bit. This, for most people, will be the greatest determinant to how satisfying and successful a consulting stint can be.

Hope this helps.

If you are trying to choose between two offers, go with which firm you fit best with. Both are great firms with great reputations in the Middle East. Also consider which practice you are interested in, as the relative size and specialty of each practice may vary by firm.

I would say BCG has the reputation of being the “go-to” for many public sector clients. BCG has a larger staff in the Middle East than McKinsey, with over 500 consultants and growing. It is one of BCG's largest offices globally. If you are specifically thinking of public sector, that is the largest practice area in BCG Middle East which gives you an idea of the strength and demand.

Ex-McKinsey Interviewer | Deep McKinsey expertise with engaging prep that turns nerves into confidence and into offers

Hi there,

Are you making this a criteria for joining?

It's a fine question to ask but ultimately fit is much more important when considering who to join (if that's your concern)! MBB aren't ‘equal’ and there are substantial differences in some aspects.

As for ME Region, both BCG and McKinsey have very interesting client & project scope. And if one were to be ‘behind’ the other, they're probably working hard to grow the business, which is fun to be part of.

Hope this helps a bit! Best of luck!

Hi there,

I'm not sure who told you all MBBs are created equal but that is just not true.

McKinsey is the undisputed #1. BCG is mostly viewed as #2 and Bain is mostly viewed as #3. This is a fairly distinct rank.

Furthermore, the rankings/prestige absolutely change across countries/regions (for example, Bain is generally more prestigious in the US than it is elsewhere).
