Hey! I have technical case interviews coming up for a data scientist role at MBB. Was wondering if anyone could share tips on how to best prepare for it.
I was thinking of finding regular case partners but I would not be of any help to them since I am not familiar with standard consulting cases. Is there anyone here who can help with technical case interviews?
Data Scientist Technical Case Interview Tips + Potential Partner

hey!
great that you’re prepping for data science roles at MBB! technical case interviews usually focus on problem solving with data, so expect questions involving SQL, Python, statistics, ML, and business interpretation of results. they’ll often blend analytics with business intuition. practice structuring your approach like a consultant: be hypothesis-driven, clear, and structured even when coding or interpreting data.
don’t worry about not doing standard cases—just find partners also targeting data roles or open to helping. you can still offer value by giving clear feedback on structure, communication, or logic even if the content is new. I’d also recommend practicing solo with real cases from data challenges, and refining how you explain your thinking out loud.
if you want help with prep or want a sparring partner, feel free to reach out!
Best,
Alessa :)

Hi there,
Ask the MBB that you're interviewing with if they can help with a mock case. Often they provide that, putting you in touch with one of their existing consultants.
Then, try and reach out to existing data scientists and run one with them. If you don't have such cases handy, as a fall back option, generate one with ChatGPT.
Best,
Cristian

Hi there,
First of all, congratulations on the invitation!
I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:
- First of all, I would advise you to get used to explaining your technical thinking in a business-focused, structured way, as this is what the consulting firms are testing for, beyond your coding or analytics skills. Practice thinking aloud when solving SQL, Python, or ML tasks, and clearly link each step back to the business goal.
- Moreover, I would strongly advise you to reach out to the recruiter and ask them about what the technical case interviews entail and if they can share a technical case study with you. This will give you a better idea of what to expect and allows you to focus your preparation accordingly.
