Closed McKinsey Intern Application

Hi,

I applied as an APD candidate for McKinsey summer associate intern in North America in November, and it has been a month since I completed the online game. Today I checked my dashboard and it finally provided an update saying the application is closed. I presume that this means rejection and no interview opportunities, but I have not received an email to that effect. I am thinking of writing to HR for more info and hope to solicit any feedback. But it seems the only avenue is a “contact us” form on the website, which I doubt would yield any return. I'm going to try that though, but wonder if anyone has suggestions about other possible ways to solicit feedback? Should I reach out to every local McKinsey recruiter I can find on LinkedIn as well? Many thanks!

Hi there,

You are correct that HR won't get back to you via a contact form on the website. Please do not “reach out to every local McKinsey recruiter".

Ultimately, you should look to friends/colleagues who know what they're doing, your university career office, or a case coach.

To improve your odds next time you need to:

  1. Get your resume in the best state possible
  2. Build up your experience (through programs, courses, volunteering, internships, etc.)
  3. Network extensively

I would strongly suggest you do not reach out to individual HR contacts to get information on your application. Internships are very difficult to get and fewer slots are available compared to full time jobs.

At this point I think you need someone like a coach or a current employee and McKinsey to review your resume and provide feedback so you have a better shot at being invited back for an interview for full time roles. I would also start to network heavily at this point to get interviews. Do you go to a target school and at a target program?

Hey there,

Not a nice way to deal with applicants…

You are correct that you are out of the race at this point, unfortunately.

I'd try to contact the head of HR for the office you applied to. Usually, their email addresses can be found online. Alternatively, try Linkedin.

Do not spam several HR staff at the same time.

Cheers,

Florian

You should try to reach out to the local head of recruiting - or to one HR contact in the office (not several, please).

But all in all, you won't get much additional information. While they should send you an email closing your application, you already know the answer… you are not getting the interview.

So you need to improve your resume and your online game performance. That's what's important know, as the other coaches also stress.
