BCG EU: Associate vs Consultant, Local Language Limitations + Career Story Advice

Hi everyone,

I’m currently preparing an application to a BCG office in Europe, thanks to an internal referral opportunity, and would really appreciate some advice on the right positioning and next steps.

Here’s a quick overview of my background:

  • Undergraduate degree from an Asian university (Business/Finance)
  • 2 years in an industrial finance role (in-house M&A and business development)
  • 3 years Master’s in Europe (top-tier program in strategy/data-related field)
  • 2 years in a data/analytics role in Europe
  • Currently 9 months in a CEO-level strategy team role (strategic scope)

My main questions are:

  1. Associate vs Consultant – which level should I aim for?
While I now work in strategy, much of my past experience has been in data/finance, and not purely strategic consulting.
Additionally, while I can communicate in the local language in daily conversations, for now, I don't think i can do case interviews in locan language. I have done my work in English so far. Case interviews in local lang would require ~1–2 weeks of intense preparation to be competitive.
Given that, should I play it safe and apply as an Associate, or do I have enough experience to go for the Consultant level?
I am ok with applying for associate if it makes the probability higher, just want to make sure that is the case.
  2. Looking for CV feedback + interview prep partner
Before submitting my CV for referral, I’d love some help adapting it to BCG standards.
Also, I’m currently preparing interviews in English/local language and would love to find someone to practice with (mock case, PEI, etc.).

Has anyone gone through a similar path in Europe or faced a similar language/positioning dilemma? Any insights or references would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks in advance – happy to connect via DM too!

Hi Sonia,

With your 4+ years of total experience and your current strategy role, I’d recommend applying directly for Consultant. I don’t think applying for Associate would be necessary (or even super helpful, tbh) to boost your chances. Instead, I’d suggest you go for the 1–2 weeks in targeted local language prep (seems like your language skills are already almost there - good job!) before interviews and then confidently apply at Consultant level.

Happy to help with CV or interview prep if needed!

Cheers,
Kevin

In addition to Kevin’s input above. I would recommend to iterate your desired career story with multiple people to ensure that you can put your best foot forward.

Also note that local language recruitments vary significantly across markets in Europe, i.e., they’re usually significantly less strict in places like NL and Scandinavia than in other parts of Europe.

Hi Sonia,

Thanks for providing a clear overview. Based on your experience, I would definitely recommend to apply for a Consultant role. Mastering the local language is largely office dependent (for some offices like Scandinavia, Iberia or FR - it is required to speak the local language in a professional way; for other offices like Belgium, UK, Germany - English if the office language).

Let me know if you still need help for CV screening and case interview prep. As former consultant in Belgium with a good network in EU, I believe I can help you.

Sonia,

You have a great profile.

You should apply for the consultant position. However, I recommend you reach out directly to the recruiter to discuss your profile and confirm that they are actively hiring for that role (this will increase the probability of passing screening). Do reach out to the recruiter with your CV ready, however. If you need any help, write to me and I can outline how the CV review process works.

Adding here also a guide that walks you in more detail through the application process:

Best,
Cristian
