Bain TIG Consultant interview - what exactly is the TIG case interview?

Hi everyone! I’ve been invited to Bain’s TIG consultant interview, and the first round includes 1 business case interview and 1 TIG case interview.

I’m trying to understand what the TIG case interview is actually like. Is it still mostly a strategy/case interview with a tech context, or is it meaningfully more technical?

A few things I’d love clarity on:

  • How technical do they expect you to be?
  • What level of technical understanding is needed for a non-engineer?
  • Do they test knowledge of topics like architecture, data, AI, product, or implementation details?
  • How is it different from a standard Bain case?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through it or knows what Bain is looking for. Thanks!

hey there :)

the TIG case at Bain is still fundamentally a business case, just with a tech lens. they’re not testing you like an engineer, but they do expect you to be comfortable discussing topics like digital strategy, data use cases, basic architecture tradeoffs, or product decisions at a high level.

for a non-technical profile, it’s enough to show structured thinking on tech problems, ask the right questions, and translate technical topics into business impact. you don’t need deep knowledge of systems or coding, but you should understand concepts like build vs buy, scalability, data value, and implementation challenges.

compared to a standard case, it’s a bit more practical and implementation-focused. less pure market sizing, more “how would you actually make this work” in a tech context.

best,
Alessa :)

Ask the recruiter.

I know this answer is disappointing in its simplicity, but the reality of interviewing is the following:

The format of the interviews keeps changing; it differs from firm to firm, office to office, and role to role. The only person who knows what you should be expecting is the recruiter. And it's totally ok to ask them about the format of the interview (the content, of course, they are not able to disclose since that would defeat the purpose of the interview).

Once you have a clear understanding from them, reach out here, and I'm happy to give you a perspective on how to best prepare.

Best,
Cristian

TIG case interviews are not deeply technical. Bain is not expecting you to architect a system or write code. They want structured thinking applied to a technology context.

On technical depth: you need enough to have a credible conversation, not enough to impress an engineer. Understand how businesses use data, AI, and digital products to create value. Know the basics of build versus buy decisions and digital transformation. That is enough.

What they actually test:

  • Can you structure a tech-related business problem like any other case
  • Do you understand how technology decisions connect to business outcomes
  • Can you ask smart questions without getting lost in jargon

How it differs from a standard Bain case: the context is tech-heavy but the underlying skills are the same. Business judgment, structured thinking, clear communication. You just need to be comfortable with the vocabulary and not freeze when terms like data infrastructure or AI come up.

Practical prep: read about how companies like Google, Amazon, or a SaaS business actually make money. Understand unit economics for tech businesses. Know enough about AI and data to discuss them at a business level.

You do not need a technical background. You need commercial thinking applied to a tech context.

Top US BCG / MBB Coach - 5,000 sessions |Tech, Platinion, Big 4 | 9/9 personal interviews passed | 95% candidate success

Hi there,

I have a list of real Digital/Tech questions asked in tech consulting interviews.

The cases tend to be more at the strategic level but can be implementation as well.

It's quite tough to find adequate tech focused cases. That's why I created 3 :)

McKinsey Digital / BCG Platinion: Oil & Gas Upstream Technology

Roma Solutions: Senior Expert Level Tech Case

Yodaphone

All of these are based on real life cases and have a tech focus.

Please feel free to reach out if you would:
a) Like more technology based cases
b) Like to be cased in the above (hint: They don't cover all aspects of those projects...i.e. the cases could take multiple twists and turns and test additional themes when I conduct them)

I also just spent an hour in a coaching session talking through tech due diligence and PE with a candidate... and have created a ton of content around that. Feel free to book a session here if you want to go deep on the tech angle.
