Background check for MBB

Question

Hi there,

How is education verification conducted by background screen companies at MBB in the US?

Do they just confirm enrollment/GPA/major or do they open up your entire student record? I feel uncomfortable with a third party having access to my financial, health and personal information.

They do not need to poke into your financial information since they are they ones going to pay you.
They do not need to poke into your health information since that might be done by immigration authorities (typically only required if you are an expat).
They do not need to poke into your personal information since they are an equal-opportunities employer and your personal life is technically not their concern. Although I think they might check for any criminal records.
Other than that you seem to be comfortable in having your information looked at - so relax!

They don't have access to that information, only the academic transcript, i.e., where and when did you attend, did you graduate and what grades/GPA (if disclosed) did you have.

They'll ask the school for a copy of your transcript, or, more likely, just verify that you attended the school and graduated like you said.

I can’t see why they should check financial, health and personal information for an education background check. For the education part, they should just verify that the university, dates and grades you reported are correct.

Hello!

Background checks are nothing to be worried about, as long as you haven´t lied (e.g., saying that you graduated from Uni X when you didn´t, or that you worked in Company Y 2 years instead of 6 months). Minor things, such as 1 month differences, etc. don´t matter.

Hence, to your question, rather the enrollement vs. the grades!

Most of the times, they are done by 3rd party companies to which the job is externalized. If they find any discrepancy, they contact you first and clarify it with you.

For instance, with the MIT background check I had the issue that the external name of my Amazon job is not the same as the one Amazon uses internally -and that was the name given in the certificated that Amazon gives oficially-. It was easily solved by an HR doc that explained that both were the same thing.
