9 months before start date too early for full-time application MBB?

Hey everyone,
I wanted to ask for your thoughts: is it too early to apply for a full-time MBB position 9–10 months before the planned start date?
I’m currently working full-time, have a 4-month notice period, and I’m planning around 8 weeks of preparation alongside my job.

Do you think that’s too early, or is this a reasonable timeline to start the application process?

Thanks a lot for your input!

Hi there,

I don't think that's too early

In general, applying a bit on the earlier side is honestly better practice, because you never know exactly what the process will be from the MBB firm's side - e.g., they may have filled their recruiting pipeline for the next X months. Thus, if you have a desired date in mind for entry, applying early is great.

That said, there is a minor risk of applying early - you may of course be invited to interview earlier than you are comfortable with. However, this is only a minor risk because you will almost always be able to simply have a chat with the respective recruiter and communicate to them your preferred timeline and process. Being allowed to interview later is almost never met with any resistance.

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Thor

Hi there,

applying 9–10 months before your intended start date is actually a good timeline, not too early. MBB recruiting tends to move slowly, and it often takes a few months from application to offer, especially if you have a notice period. Starting now gives you enough time to go through screening, interviews, and any scheduling delays without pressure.

If you’re targeting a specific office, it’s worth checking their local application cycles; some have fixed windows, while others accept experienced-hire applications year-round. Overall, your plan to prepare for 6–8 weeks while working and apply about 9 months out is perfectly reasonable!

No, it's not too early at all.

Depending on the role and geography you're applying for, start dates can even be a year away from when you did your interview.

Typically, once you do have an offer the starting date is negotiable, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Hi!
This actually seems like great timing considering many MBB once they extend an offer will have a wait period of 3-5 months before you would join - so it seems you're right on track!

Just be sure you're ready (case pre wise) once you apply!

Good luck!

Is it unreasonable to ask to have the interviews in Jan/ February to have sufficient time for the prep? I just received a referral link and was wondering if I apply now how flexible it is to ask for the interviews to only take place by then?

Great question - and one that many candidates have. I think you may be in the clear. By the time you apply, it will take time for them to get back to you. By then you can have a chat with the recruiters and say something along the lines of "I want to ensure I am well prepared for this great opportunity, is it reasonable to shoot for the new year for an interview date?"

Try and read their response and see how they respond. They may surprise you and be completely fine with it!

Hi there,

Applying 9–10 months before your intended start date is perfectly reasonable, especially with a long notice period. MBB offices hire experienced professionals year-round, and the full process — from application to offer — usually takes 6–8 weeks. Offers also tend to stay valid for several months, and start dates are flexible. Applying now shows good planning and gives you enough time to prepare and manage logistics smoothly.

Hey there, 9–10 months before start is actually a reasonable timeline. It gives you enough time to prepare thoroughly while managing your notice period. Just make sure your prep and application schedule are realistic alongside your current job. best, Alessa :)

Hello,

That’s actually a pretty reasonable timeline! MBB usually recruits about 6–9 months before the intended start date, so you’re right in the window. Starting early also gives you time to prep properly without rushing. You can always check with HR for the exact cycle, but you’re definitely not too early.
