Morgan Stanley target schools

Hello everyone, does Morgan Stanley recruit heavily from target schools only, or is there a chance for non-target candidates? I go to a solid university, but it’s not one of the traditional targets like Oxbridge or LSE. Is there still a realistic path into IB at MS?

Hey there,

it's definitely possible to break into Morgan Stanley from a non-target school. While they do recruit heavily from top universities, they also look for exceptional candidates from other schools. If you’ve got strong technical skills, relevant experience, and network effectively, you can still stand out. Focus on making connections, acing your prep, and showing your passion for investment banking.

If you need any suppport on the way, I'd be happy to help.

Hey

Morgan Stanley does prioritize recruiting from traditional target schools like Oxbridge and LSE, as these universities have well-established pipelines and relationships with the firm. However, it’s definitely still possible for strong candidates from non-target schools to break in, especially if they can demonstrate exceptional skills, relevant internships, and strong networking. The key is to be proactive—building connections through alumni, attending networking events, and applying early to stand out.

Many successful candidates from non-target schools supplement their applications with solid technical preparation and clear, compelling stories about their motivation and fit for investment banking. While the path might be a bit tougher without the target school brand, focusing on your strengths, gaining relevant experience, and leveraging every networking opportunity can create a realistic chance to land an internship or analyst role at Morgan Stanley.

Hey!

Morgan Stanley does have a strong presence at traditional target schools because those programs often have established pipelines and large alumni networks. However, the firm also values diverse backgrounds and skills, so it’s definitely possible for candidates from non-target schools to break in. What matters most is your ability to demonstrate strong technical knowledge, a clear passion for finance, and excellent interpersonal skills during the interview process.

For non-target candidates, the key is to be proactive in building relevant experience, such as internships, networking, and preparing thoroughly for interviews. Highlighting your unique perspective and how you can add value to the team can help you stand out. Many successful analysts and associates come from less traditional backgrounds, so focus on what you can control—your preparation, mindset, and how you present yourself. With the right approach, a path into Morgan Stanley is realistic even if you’re not from a target school.
