Is it too early to network for off-cycle investment banking roles?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently pursuing my bachelor's in finance and still have over a year left until graduation. I’ve been reading that networking is key for breaking into investment banking, especially for off-cycle internships.

Would it be strange or too early to start reaching out to analysts or associates now to express interest for roles that open next year? I don’t want to come off as too pushy, but I’m also trying to be proactive and build relationships.

Would love to hear how others approached early networking, what worked, what didn’t, and any advice you’d give your past self.

Thanks so much!

Hey, great question and cool that you’re thinking ahead. I’d say it’s never really too early to start building relationships, but it’s probably a bit early to ask about specific roles that aren’t even open yet. That can feel a bit off timing-wise and might come across as pushy even if that’s not what you mean.

What usually works better is keeping it casual. Just reach out to learn more about people’s paths, hear how they got in, and get a feel for the space. That way, when the timing is right and roles do open up, you’ve already got some relationships in place.

One thing about networking that I cannot stress enough: Some chats go nowhere, others stick – this is totally normal.

So yeah, be curious, be real, and don’t worry about trying to “get” something from every conversation. Focus more on the long game and good things tend to happen.

Hope this helps and good luck!
Simon

It’s definitely not too early to start networking - in fact, being proactive well in advance shows foresight and genuine interest. Many students make the mistake of waiting until roles are posted, by which time it can be harder to stand out. Reaching out now gives you time to build authentic relationships, learn more about the culture and workflow at different firms, and eventually be top of mind when opportunities open. The key is to approach conversations with curiosity rather than asking for a job outright.

When reaching out, focus on learning rather than selling yourself. Ask thoughtful questions about their path, their experience in off-cycle roles, and any advice they might have for someone in your position. Keep your messages concise and respectful of their time. A few well-maintained connections can go a long way, especially if you follow up occasionally with updates or thank-you notes. Early networking is less about immediate outcomes and more about laying the groundwork and those who start early often see the best results.

No, it's not too early to network for off-cycle investment banking roles—early networking shows initiative and gives you a competitive edge. Also, pursuing an IFRS Diploma at Mirchawala's can strengthen your finance credentials and make you more attractive to banks.

Not too early at all! I started reaching out about a year before I applied, and most people were really open to chatting. Just be polite, show real interest, and don’t ask for a job right away. Focus on learning and building the connection. It really helps later on!
