I know that many consulting firms have reapplication or "ban periods" after an unsuccessful interview process, often between 12 and 24 months.
Is this also common in investment banking and private equity or can you simply apply again in the next recruiting cycle?

It can be the case, but I don’t think there is one general rule for all investment banks or private equity firms. It can depend on the firm, the role you applied for and sometimes also on how far you got in the process. I would check the specific firm’s policy or ask the recruiter before applying again. In some cases, you may be able to apply in the next cycle, while in others there might be a waiting period.
