Skipping digital assessment at Bain after McK is done

Hi,

Can I and how to ask the Bain recruiter to let me skip digital assessment as I have already done it with McK and even got into the second round? I am not familiar with particular type of assessment Bain provides but McK PSG was fun.

No, please don't.

You mention why you think you should skip the digital assessment. However, you didn't mention why you NEED to skip the digital assessment.

Here's the thing: they are different companies using different tests with different criteria and… Bain does not have access to McK's results. As such, Bain will not be excited by the suggestion.

So you need to provide a reason. And it has to be a good one. Since you don't have an offer from McKinsey and are not pressured by time… it looks like you don't want to prepare for the test. That will convey a poor work ethic, that you are not very interested at Bain, and overall poor judgement. Best case scenario, you have a negative interaction with Bain. Worse case, you are red flagged.

Hi there,

Unfortunately, it doesn't work this way.

All firms will ask you to go through their own funnel. The only thing you can do is to let them know that you are interviewing with other firms as well so they can schedule your next round earlier.

Best,

Cristian

Hello,

I agree with the advice you are getting on this - in your situation, you should not ask Bain to skip the digital assessment. They are different firms with different recruiting processes, and the assessments are correspondingly different too.

No

They are not the same test and you cannot leverage results across companies. The only time this might be considered is if you already have an offer from McKinsey and are looking to accelerate the interview process for Bain. Either way if you enjoyed the McK test you will be fine for the Bain one too.

1. Bain digital assessment includes numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, behavioral assessment & pattern recognition (I found the latter to be especially hard and I would never have passed it without solid preparation from external sources), therefore it is completely different from McKinsey PSG (and less “fun” in that sense).

2. You should NOT ask Bain to skip this step! It would come across as arrogant and leave a bad impression to the recruiting team. Especially if you provide them the reasoning you provided here (already done assessment at McK and came to 2nd round) it would make it even worse, since it would imply that McKinsey's assessment is more rigorous than Bain's.

Hi there,

Q: Can I and how to ask the Bain recruiter to let me skip digital assessment as I have already done it with McK and even got into the second round?

The only way to leverage occasionally a faster process is to let another company know that you have an offer from (not that you are interviewing with) a firm that they consider a competitor, and ask if it is possible to organize the next steps faster given the offer (it worked in my case with BCG). However, there is no guarantee that they will let you skip steps of the process.

Good luck!

Please don't do this.

Bain is not McKinsey. This is a really bad look.

Additionally, the Bain assessment is completely different to McKinsey. You need to prepare for it separately.

PLEASE don't do this! You might even get yourself blacklisted for such a question - it will most certainly be taken VERY negatively.

Cheers, Sidi

McKinsey and Bain are different companies with different recruiting processes. The McKinsey Game isn't a standardized test which is used across any of the other consulting Firms. Asking to skip the test will come off very badly - Bain needs a chance to assess you as well! I suggest strongly that you do not.

Hi, I confirm the tests are really different (the Bain multiple choice test comprehends logic, math, and verbal reasoning). I would avoid asking them explicitly, but I would call HR asking for an acceleration of the process due to the 2nd round in McK. It can happen you skip the test
