How does the University of Toronto Rotman MBA compare vs. top MBAs in the US in terms of opening up international opportunities? How about exit opps in finance, consulting and industry within Canada itself?

I'm not sure what I want to do post-MBA, but I have heard there are few finance spots in Canada, making an exit to consulting or industry more likely for me if I stay in the country.

My pre-MBA background is post-BA level consulting at BCG.

Hi,

Without knowing anything else about your profile / current location, I would consider M7 over Rotman.

M7 have better brand globally and provide you access to 3 year work permit in US (most M7 MBAs are now categorized STEM).

The only situation, where I would prioritize Rotman, is if you want to live and work in Canada only for personal reasons. Even then Harvard/Stanford/Wharton are stronger brands than Rotman, even in Canada. The other probably at par or slightly lower than Rotman depending on who you ask.

Happy to discuss this further if helpful.

Hi there,

It depends with what top MBA schools in the US you compare it to.

I'd say that top US schools tend to have a better brand than UoT.

However, I wouldn't choose which MBA to go for solely based on this.

At the end of the day, there are so many other things that your likelihood of getting a consulting offer depends on (e.g., how well you prepare your CV, your networking strategy, your case skills, etc.).

Sharing with you an article that goes into more detail into how to set up an application strategy:

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Q: How does the University of Toronto Rotman MBA compare vs. top MBAs in the US in terms of opening up international opportunities?

You can check which options work best for your goals as follows:

  1. Go on LinkedIn
  2. Add Rotman as "School"
  3. Filter by each MBB/target company as “Current company” for your target geography
  4. Find how many consultants/alumni are there
  5. Repeat for the other schools you could consider
  6. Normalize the results for the cohort size of the school to compare

This should help to have a data-driven answer.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hello,

Top US MBAs have bigger brand names and are generally considered more prestigious, so they will open up more opportunities for you internationally.

Very openly nothing comes close to top US MBAs (and a very select few European ones). The top US MBAs (say, top 15) literally line up MBB/consulting/PE opportunities for you. Not to say Toronto Rotman is a bad choice, it's just not at the same level.

None of the previous answers inquire as to your own personal situation to determine which is a better choice FOR YOU as opposed to some average potential student.

You need to consider your own personal situation.

My first child was planning to enter this world on the first day of MBA orientation.  For me, given that I wanted to live and work in Canada, it just didn't make sense to pay 3x the tuition, give up my Rotman scholarship, move away from supportive family, take on larger living expenses, only to return to the same job opportunities that Rotman would provide me in Toronto.

That's why I chose Rotman.

PM if you'd like to share more details and we can discuss your situation.
