Rejected by Mckinsey in 2 days without invite to Solve Game

Hi,

I applied to Mckinsey for the position of Business Analyst recently for Indian Offices and was rejected within 2 days only with automatic rejection letter and no invite to solve game. I got this instead:

“After careful consideration of your application, we have concluded that we cannot proceed with your candidacy for the Business Analyst position at this time.”

Last time I applied to McKinsey Jan of 2023 I was at least invited to the game but was rejected after that. Not sure what went wrong this time. I am not from their target school but have 2 years of experience at Big4 under me. Thought that should be good enough, no?

Hi there, and sorry to hear that you were rejected,

Usually, getting this response means that your resume didn't make it through the initial filter phase (i.e.: machine screening),

There could be multiple reasons why you got this answer from their side after initially getting invited for the game.

The most realistic would be that they are not recruiting at the specific office you applied to as the industry is experiencing a downturn recently.

Another reason might be that they are currently not looking for people with your profile (i.e.: analyst with big 4 experience), and are probably focusing more on more experienced hires.

Also, as a general piece of advice, I would recommend never applying to any firm before securing a referral from an employee in your target company (the higher the position of the employee, the better)

Hope this answers your question, and best of luck in your next steps!

Fady

Have you checked with the recruiters in these Indian offices for when you can re-apply?

There is a period of 1-2 years which has to elapse for you to be re-considered. It could be that in these offices that period is 2 years, and thus it was too early for you to re-apply. I would check with the offices in any case.

I am not in active contact with the recruiter. I applied through the job portal and not via any recruiter.

Hi there,

I would have contacted HR before the new application and secured a high-profile referral for the second try.

The current market is quite bad and most resumes are rejected! You want to pull every lever possible to make your application stand out!

All the best,

Florian

1) Recruiting is harder now

2) You failed the game before
