Hi Everyone!

I have got an interview coming up, and its within the Energy Transition team. Any tips on preparing in a more focused manner?

Types of cases/industries that I should be looking out for?

There are two types of cases you may get:

  • Regulatory: These relate to specific issues with energy regulation, such as incentive models for hydrogen deployment, carbon pricing, moving towards grid flexibility, etc…
  • Non-regulatory: These related to questions for businesses on how to decarbonise and can be in any sector. Cases could be things like “How can we decarbonise our shipping emissions” or “How can we reduce our carbon footprint in our warehouses”

Overall, however, you will always need to be structured, hypothesis-driven and will need to aim for delivering insight.

Reach out as I have experience with sustainability interview cases both @ BCG and in my previous role as an economic consultant.

Hi there (again),

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for a lot of users, thus I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Research the Energy Transition team and its focus areas: It would be helpful to research PWC's Energy Transition team and understand its focus areas and how it helps clients in the energy sector. This will give you a better understanding of what types of cases and industries you may be working on if you were to join the team.
  • Understand the energy industry and its current trends: It would be helpful to familiarize yourself with the current trends and challenges in the energy industry, as well as the various technologies and strategies that are being used to address these challenges.
  • Practice case interviews: It is likely that the cases studies and industries you should be looking out for as you prepare for your interview with PWC Australia Energy Transition will be related to energy and sustainability. This may include case studies on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction initiatives. It may also be helpful to familiarize yourself with the specific industries and sectors that the Energy Transition team works with, such as the oil and gas industry, the utility sector, and the transportation industry.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on what to do in your specific situation, please feel free to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

I worked in consulting in Australia, so I'm happy to be of service. I am also based in Australia so feel free to reach out for any support!

Importantly, you need to know the major Energy Transition pieces for Australia. A few of them (not comprehensive) are:

  1. The Greens just had a solid turnout in the recent election (have influence/sway)
  2. Massive LNG developments in WA - Gorgon, Wheatsone, etc.
  3. Large coal mining operations in QLD, but likely phasing out
  4. Renewables push - example: Wind in Tasmania, and a TransTasman cable proposed to transport electricity to VIC
  5. Large deposits for renewable energy (Lithium etc.) discovered in Australia (Tesla looking to develop)
  6. China + India relations (major buyers of coal)
  7. Push for solar in Australia…for a number of years it was decentralized (you could have your own and sell to the grid), but that was turned away due to lobbying…talks to bring it back

Major Industries in Australia:

Tier 1

  • Finance (Big 4 banks et al) - ANZ, NAB, Westpac, Commbank
  • Energy (ranging from Oil & Gas to electricity networks/distribution) - Chevron, etc.
  • Mining - Rio tinto, BHP, etc.
  • CPG/Retail - especially the major supermarkets Coles/Woolies

Tier 2

  • Insurance
  • Healthcare
  • Government/Public Sector (close to Tier 1)
  • TMT (Especially telecomms)

Tier 3

  • Agriculture
  • Large Capex/Infrastructure
  • PE

Hello,

Agree with Giacomo here. Additionally:

1) I would recommend doing some industry specific drills on RocketBlocks. This will help you build some nuanced knowledge in the energy industry by throwing all kinds of questions at your pertaining to this industry,

2) Be familiar with the revenue and cost drivers of this industry so you are comfortable to go in detail and show off your business acumen in your interview :)

Hope this helps!
