Postpone McKinsey Interview

Hi there, is it a good idea to ask for postponing my summer intern interview with Mckinsey? The original interview will be this week but I found myself not prepared for the case interview. Would love to hear what you guys think since it's pretty late in the recruiting timeline for the summer internship. Thanks a lot!

Yes, postponing in this situation is absolutely ok and a good idea.

a) As you only get one shot with MBB firms, it's better to take your time and prepare adequately rather than over-rushing it

b) recruiters, who manage the interview scheduling, are not the decision makers / doing your performance evaluation - so no need to worry about negative impact

Hope this helps.

Hi there,

Consulting companies are usually flexible in terms of scheduling, unless there is urgency due to the needs of a particular project or they have a fixed timeline for interviews.

You can definitely ask to postpone, although it's good practice to do this as early as possible. Worst case they will say it is not an option, but there is no harm in asking.

Best,

Francesco

Yes, you can always ask to postpone.

When I was at McKinsey, I found that the recruiters were generally appreciative of this.  They want you to do well and if you don't think you're ready, then good for you for realizing this and communicating it.

Just don't do it the day before.  That starts to appear a little unprofessional.

Hope that helps,

Allen

Hello!

It´s 100% a good idea, for sure. It´s what I always advise, and what I did myself back in the day (and thank God I did so!!). It was also very very late in the recuriting calendar, but at the end of the day, you only have one bullet. You need to reserve it and use it well.

Furthermore, there is nothing to lose. they won´t think bad of you, or cancel the interview.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hi there,

Simple answer - ask for interview to be rescheduled!

To elaborate - which of the following do you think is worse?

  • Asking to reschedule, even on short notice, which is something that people do all the time for all sorts of reasons…
  • Walking into a McKinsey interview feeling unprepared…

Get in touch with your recruiter and let them know that, unfortunately, a conflict has come up and you'd rather reschedule to be 100% ready and focused when the time comes.

Hope this helps! Best of luck!

YES

Always postpone if you don't feel ready. MBB doesn't recruit based on available roles, but based on skills. So it's not like if you postpone the interview you're missing out on a role that if only temporarily available. Then the whole point is to get to the level that is required for passing the interview.

Also, firms prefer candidates postponing the interview rather than coming unprepared. Then they waste their time and you waste an opportunity.

Dear candidate,

yes you can postpone the interview, just try to give them an early heads-up, so they are aware.

If you are not prepared please push out your interview. You only get one shot at a first interview it so might as well make it a great one. They will understand so ask the recruiters for more time to prepare.

Hi there,

I highly recommend you ask to postpone. If you do it in a polite manner there's no risk!

If you are not ready, you should postpone.

1) Consulting firms are understanding of this

2) If you are not ready, you will fail.

So, this is a no-brainer.

You can and should ask for reschedule if needed, it is absolutely fine if within reasonable frames

Hi there,

That might be a bit late but maybe if someone in the future reads this:

Most McKinsey offices are very accommodating and flexible to applicants and are happy to reschedule interviews even on short notice.

You should always ask and provide a proper reason. The worst is that they cannot reschedule.

Cheers,

Florian
