Hi everyone,

I had my first interview with the Engagement Manager (Oliver Wyman) today. Another 2 rounds are scheduled on 21 and 22 March with Partners. OW has scheduled 3 rounds directly and not one by one in a gap of a week or so.

Position - Senior Consultant (Private Capital group)

My experience today:

The scheduled time was 45 mins but the first 10 mins were wasted on internet connection. His internet was not working properly and he was in hurry and told me that he has to stop in 45 mins. He told me to turn off the camera due to poor internet connection and we were doing audio-only.

After restoring the internet connection, I was introducing myself and had spoken one line and he stopped me and asked me regarding the startup that I was speaking about, while explaining to him internet went off again. After restoring the internet, I completed the startup story but he did not let me complete the whole introduction and directly asked me what is the main elements in the DD report which was a bit confusing for me and I answered vaguely like a balance sheet, financials, etc.

He then told me if I have any questions that I would like to ask, which I did ask and then he started a case (market sizing).

Case - Market size the assets held by an individual which can be invested by wealth management in the UK.

He kept telling me that he is in hurry. I started structuring and he was like please present it in 2 mins (Politely), I did that and he told me that the structure sounds somewhat reasonable to him, and while calculating he was telling me that there is a better way to do this for each branch then I would brainstorm and come up with something different, he did this couple of times and as we had very limited time, he told me that please share the total market size number with me, which I did (9 billion) and he said thank you and asked me with whom I would be having the next interview with and I shared the name of the partner and he disconnected the call as he was in a hurry.

My impressions:

I had prepared so hard for this and had so many interesting fit stories to share. My introduction was very good but he did let me complete it. Feeling extremely disappointed. I know there are still 2 interviews left with the partner but still, it could have been better had it been like a normal or proper interview. I did not expect this kind of interview. No structure, very chaotic and messy. He did not ask me any fit questions, why consulting, why OW, why me etc. The interviewer always seems disinterested in me as I believe he was always thinking about the meeting that he was gonna have after our call. I have had a chat with around 9-10 people at OW and all seemed really nice and wanted me to succeed but here the case was very different.

From his LinkedIn profile, EM has joined the firm 9 months ago, started as an Associate, and recently got promoted to EM (been 3 months as an EM).

I am sure he is gonna give negative feedback to HR as nothing went well.

1 - I have interviews scheduled with Partner on 21 and 22 March so I do not think I have time for feedback. Can anyone please guide me on what should I do next?

2 - Does the Partner evaluation out shadows EM evaluation?

3 - Is it possible that he might give the negative feedback to HR today and HR will cancel the scheduled interviews with Partners on Monday? I really do not want this to happen as I have been preparing for months and cannot take this without showing my full potential.

4 - EM asked me with whom I would be having an interview next? What does this mean? Is he directly gonna share the feedback with the Partner?

Hi there,

For points 2-4 there is nothing you can control here and knowing doesn't change anything (furthermore, we don't even really know). Forget about points 2-4 and focus on what matters (i.e. point 1).

It sounds like you're ill-prepared for the interviews and don't know what you don't know, so to speak. If you truly want to increase your chances, hire a coach!

Unfortunately we can't really advise here as we haven't assessed you and your weaknesses - we don't know specifically what you need to improve on!

That said, have a read of the following for some last minute help:

Dear candidate,

all in all it sounds like it went fine. In the sense that these external factors do not have anything to do with you and you seem to have been able to provide good answers. Simply wait for feedback. Typically feedback is shared between interviews so the next interviewer is informed and knows what to ask and focus on.

Best regards

Hi anon, would you be able to reflect on what happened in your next interviews and did you get an offer?
