McKinsey First Round Personal Experience Interview

Good evening,

I got told by the McKinsey recruiter that for my first round interview with two consultants, we will only cover two Personal Experience dimensions, which is “Personal Impact” and “Inclusive Leadership”. Can I be sure that this is true, so would you say I can go without preparing for the “Entrepreneurial Drive” dimension?

Hey there,

There are 2 important factors here:

  1. McKinsey does not do trick interviews, hence, if they say that these will be the dimensions they look then you can be sure that this is their intention.
  2. However, I already had 2 coachees, where the interviewers changed last minute and they clearly did not get the briefing. The result was that they were asked about a different dimension than what was communicated initially.

Hence, I'd definitely have one strong Entrepreneurial Drive story ready for this round as well. You don't want to leave anything up to chance with McKinsey.

For more on the PEI and how to deliver it with the SCORE framework, check out the article that I wrote for PrepLounge: https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles/mckinsey-pei

All the best!

Hello!

I don´t see a reason why they would deliberately lie to you on that. However, there are things that can change -and are outside that person´s control-, and do you want to take that risk?

For FIT, particularly this Behavioral questions that you are mentioning, I would 100% prepare for the three posible dimensions - if it´s not in this round, it will pay off in the next one.

If you want to deep dive on the topic, the "Integrated FIT guide for MBB" has been recently published in PrepLounge´s shop (https://www.preplounge.com/en/shop/tests-2/integrated-fit-guide-for-mbb-34)

It provides an end-to-end preparation for all three MBB interviews, tackling each firms particularities and combining key concepts review and a hands-on methodology. Following the book, the candidate will prepare his/her stories by practicing with over 50 real questions and leveraging special frameworks and worksheets that guide step-by-step, developed by the author and her experience as a Master in Management professor and coach. Finally, as further guidance, the guide encompasses over 20 examples from real candidates.

Furthermore, you can find 3 FREE Expert Articles on PreLounge, in a sreies dedicated to preparing for the different parts of FIT:

2. https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles/motivational-fit-interview-questions

Feel free to PM me for disccount codes for the Integrated FIT Guide, since we still have some left from the launch

Hope it helps!

Hi there,

That's a great question!

If I were you, I'd especially focus on developing the stories for the dimensions they highlighted, but also prepare at least one story for ‘Entrepreneurial Drive’ too.

That's mostly because you might get a question that you feel is best served by your Entrepreneurial Drive story or simply because you might end be being more mentally comfortable with some extra preparation.

For sure though, if they tell you they will only look at two dimensions, they won't try to take you by surprise.

Hi there,

I would prepare also for the Entrepreneurial Drive story. The reasons are:

  1. They may ask for that in the final, so eventually you will have to prepare the story
  2. They may change the agenda and ask for that (very low probability but better safe than sorry – I know cases where HR miscommunicated what would have happened in the interview)

You can read more on the PEI dimensions here:

Hope this helps,

Hi there,

There shouldn't be any reason for this not being true. However, as eventually you would cover the 4 PEI dimensions in your interview process, you should at least have 2-3 stories ready for each dimensions.

Best,

Alberto

Yes you can be sure.

But a good consultant is always prepared for the unexpected, so I would prepare for the "Entrepreneurial Drive" interview as well.

Hope this helps,

What would you say if your first round interviewer asked you for an “entrepreneurial drive” story…?  The likelihood is low but if you're serious about McKinsey then I don't see any reason not to have at least one story prepared.

Hi there,

Do not go without preparing for the Entrepreneurial Drive dimension.

Downside cost of preparing it: A few hours of your time

Downside cost/risk of not preparing it: The offer.

In these interviews always be prepared for everything!
