It is a HIGHLY risky strategy to prepare for only one PEI question for the first round. There is never a set pattern on which PEI question can come up so have at least 1 story for each of the dimensions.

Hi there,

Q: Does anyone knows which dimension of the PEI dimensions usually is the focus during the first round In the US?

Based on the feedback from my candidates, you might receive any of the dimensions in the first round at McKinsey.

Even if there was a higher probability to receive one in a specific US office, I would not change the strategy for the preparation and I would still prepare 2 stories for each of them (as mentioned by Andi it is a good idea to have a backup) to avoid possible risks.

You can find more on the 4 McKinsey dimensions below:

Good luck!

Hi there,

Please please don't play this game!

There are only a few dimensions. That's not too much to learn!

Please also remember anything can happen. They do not have to ask dimensions and go by the books if they don't want to.

Yes, prepare for the PEI. Prepare for all 4 dimensions.

AND, prepare to have a conversation as well!

If you're truly wondering, I agree with Cristian that leadership and personal impact seem to be a bit more asked.

Hello,

You're equally likely to get any of the dimensions - be sure to prepare for them all!

Hi there,

That's a great question.

Yes, theoretically, you can receive any dimension.

But from what I've noticed within my base of candidates, usually for first round, in 80% of cases it's either Inclusive Leadership or Personal Impact.

Entrepreneurial Drive pops up once in a while, but not as often.

Still, if you want to be strategic about your prep, I would rather suggest that you invest extra effort in having one leading story per dimension (and then the back-up stories less prepared), rather than not preparing a dimension altogether.

Best of luck!
Cristian

Hi there,

while there are certain tendencies for specific offices (e.g. include Personal Impact in R1) in my experience, I strongly suggest you don't speculate here. PEI is too important of a factor in McK's assessmont to gamble on it - it would quite likely cost you an offer.

Instead, have at least 1 story per dimension ready, ideally also a backup story each to be safe. You will need them for final round anyway, so it's a good idea to front-load.

In case you're struggling to come up with / find stories and develop them - this is a common issue that I see and can be fixed. Feel free to reach out via DM to mea or any of the other coaches - happy to have a chat.

Regards, Andi
