Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer!

1) Is there a dress code for the work (like suits and ties all the time or what?

It depends on the office. Most likely shirt+suite+tie for men Monday to Thursday. Friday you may or may not need a tie according to whether you visit the client/the policy of the office.

2) Any advice to excel at the work and get the most out of it?

Here are some tips for the first weeks:

  1. Take notes when your manager tells you something – this will help you to remember details and will show you care about them to the team.
  2. Always double-check. The first impression is very important in consulting (and in any industry in general): if you show you are reliable from the beginning, you create a reputation of a reliable person. Double checks should be done on expectations for your job, your Excel analysis, your slides – basically everything.
  3. Define priorities before starting any set of tasks. The majority of the results usually come from a subset of activities – this is true also for your tasks in consulting. You have to identify which they are and prioritize them – the application of the so-called 80-20 rule or Pareto Principle. Alignment on priorities and expectations is particularly important with your manager at the beginning of the project.
  4. Socialize with your colleagues and start to build a network. Consulting (most likely also your new industry) is a people business and you should build a good network both within and outside the company. A good start is key to develop good relationships long-term. More difficult to do during COVID – but there may still be opportunities for virtual gatherings. Try to take advantage of as many as possible to build connections.
  5. Organize your private life activities. You want to organize your calendar to leave some space for personal activities (sport/ friends/ family). This is not easy but can be managed if you organize well, and long-term will be critical to keep a balance between work and private life. Also, it is better to align with your manager/teammates from the beginning on your core needs, so that there are no surprises later on.
  6. Ask for feedback every two-three weeks – this will show you are proactive and willing to learn.
  7. Ask for help when you don't know what to do – better to let know you are in trouble with meeting a deadline than missing the deadline.
  8. Be social and respectful with the support staff – these people are great and influential as well in the company.

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi there,

It has been our pleasure - so glad we were able to help with your journey of getting a Mckinsey offer!

1) Yes there is a dress code. For your first week, it's better to overdress than underdress. I personally wore a suit and tie the first week, then went no tie moving forward. That said, it's office dependent (Australia is more relaxed culturally) so feel free to ask your colleague about what works.

I would like to give you just one tip to make the most out of the opportunity:

Take full responsibility for everything that comes your way, good and bad. This way you move from reacting to consciously responding. Lets say, your boss or client say something nasty to you, receive this, internalise it and consciously decide what to do- reply back, clarify, whack them or do nothing. Apply this to every situation and you will feel in control. Dont react just out of instinct or emotions. This will allow you to give your best and not worry about the outcome. If you shy away from taking responsibility of people and situations, you will fall short and feel anxious. Expand your ability of responsibility as much as you can.

What you can do, you must do. What you cant do, thats okay.

Hope this make sense.

Regarding dress code, best check with colleagues/HR from the local office

All the best.

Hello!

Congrats, that is wonderful to hear!

Yes, there is dresscode: unless told otherwise, always tie and suit for clients, and business casual on Fridays for the office.

However, in McK, they will asign you a buddy that will get in touch with you before your start, that will guide you through all these things that you need to know prior to your start date.

Welcome to the Firm ;)

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Hey there,

Congrats first of all!

1. The dresscode depends on the client and is discussed before each project. If you are working for a sports goods manufacturer, you will wear jeans and sweaters; if you are working for a financial institution, its suit and tie - just to provide two extreme examples.

I mostly wore a suit without tie.

2. McKinsey has a very good training in place + the gobal helpdesk you should call if you are struggling with excel for more than 5 minutes. Its super efficient!

Enjoy the ride!

Cheers,

Florian

Assume suit and tie (and the equivalent for women). Then it can change according to the office, some are more relaxed (business casual, or even casual), and to the client.

I've seen it all: suit and tie, no tie, no suit. ;)

Having said this, just be prepared to have to go to a client meeting without much head notice. So if the dress code for the client is suit and tie, always wear a suit when in the office (and have a tie in your locker/backpack/laptop case).

Nicely done! Congratulations on the offer!

Regarding your questions:

  • Dress code: Consultants usually wear suit w/o tie. A very typical and forgettable look is just perfect. However, as an ops consultant I often ran around in a boiler suit with full PPE. So be prepared for anything ;)
  • Excel: You will learn the ins and outs of good excel modelling on the job as well as formal trainings at McKinsey. Really no need to prepare. Instead, enjoy your free time while it lasts!

Best of luck for your start at McKinsey!
