McKinsey Blog Writing Test

Hi everyone,

Is anyone familiar with McKinsey’s blog writing test? That’s the exam given by their publishing/editorial team called McKinsey Global Publishing. I think they typically ask the candidates to write an article. Any tips will be super helpful! Thanks!

Hi there,

I haven't yet had a candidate take this test, but I'd recommend the following outside-in:

  1. Reach out to the recruiter to understand the format and requirements of the test
  2. Reach out to people in similar roles in McKinsey who are likely to have taken the test. Network with them and ask them for advice on ‘what does it take to be successful with the test’
  3. Read far and wide on what the publishing arm of McKinsey does. Reach and relevance is a huge initiative so there are lots of materials. You will definitely need to be familiar with the format and style of the work they do in order to nail the interview.

Best of luck!

Oh wow, totally first news for me that this existed! Even after years helping out in the PrepL Q&A, I guess it must a very small pool.

As other said, do as much research as you can -tough if you are shortlisted for this, for sure it´s because you have the credentials have done similar things n the past.

Cheers,

Clara

Sounds like fun!  I've not heard of the test before but having worked with a few from the editorial team, I would definitely familiarise yourself with Barbra Minto's Pyramid Principle as well as the wealth of articles that are available on the public domain.  Good luck!

Read up as many articles as you can from the McKinsey Quarterly, anything published on their website and also articles from MGI etc. You want to try and mimic their style as much as possible, especially the use of data, charts and how to structure an article.

All the best to you,

Udayan

Hi there,

Completely agree with both Christian and Udayan.

Cannot recommend enough doing a good amount of googling and reaching out to people.

Good luck!
