If you apply to a certain position at McKinsey and get rejected. Do you automatically get banned from applying for other positions as well?
McKinsey and Company

Hi there,
Yes.
Basically they consider that you need to improve your profile to make it worth interviewing you again. That means that you can't apply again immediately or apply for another role in the firm.
Check with your target office what is the duration that they recommend until you apply again (different office use different times for different roles), then aim to elevate your profile as much as possible during that time. Try getting more relevant work experience or academic qualifications and already start working on a plan for getting a referral. Lastly, if you were rejected at the interview stage, figure out what were the development gaps that you have and start working on them.
Best of luck!

Hi there,
Yes, that is unfortunately the case.
If you have applied for an internship, the ban is 12 months (usually), for a full-time position the ban is 24 months.
In order to shorten the time and get better chances to get invited again, there are two things you need to do:
- Network and get a strong referral (ideally from an EM upwards)
- Improve your resume in a couple of dimensions (academia, professional experience, extracurricular activities, time spent abroad)
Cheers,
Florian

Hi there,
I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:
- Yes, this is correct. McKinsey typically imposes a one-year ban on reapplying after being rejected for a position.
- If you are interested in pursuing other opportunities at McKinsey, it is a good idea to first network and research the various positions that may be available. This can help you understand the requirements and expectations for different roles and ensure that you are well-prepared when applying.
- It is also important to be mindful of the number of positions you apply for, as applying to several positions at once may dilute your efforts and make it more difficult to stand out as a candidate. Focus on targeting your applications to positions that align with your skills and experiences, and be sure to tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your relevant qualifications.
If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.
Best,
Hagen

Hi there,
I have to disagree with the general statements made other coaches. They're right for most cases but there are exceptions:
- When I was an MBA student at ESADE, McKinsey advised people to apply and interview for the summer internship positions first and then for Associate roles. That's because if they fail, they only get banned from applying for the summer internship position, but not from applying for a FT Associate position, for which they can interview shortly after. I have heard the same from at least one other MBA cohort in France.
- There's another way around a ban that I'm aware of, which has to do with interviewing in different locations. How do I know this? Because I saw it happening in front of my eyes. Feel free to reach out if you'd like to learn more.
For now, I will just say that it's difficult to come back ahead of time but not as hopeless as one might think.
Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!

Hello,
Yes. Unless there are significant differences to your skills/education. E.g. if you do a 1 year MBA after your first rejection, then the 24 month ban shouldn't hold ideally.
Hope this helps!

Hi there,
Yes, and the ban is approx 1 year. If you're unsure what to apply for, that's where networking comes in handy!

Yes, there is a ban: for 24 months you cannot apply to any position in any office at McKinsey.

Hello!
Unfortunately, yes.
The reason for the ban is that you need to add "relevant" experience to your CV, and you need at least 12-18 months for that.
A referral would for sure help, but after the required months.
Don´t give up!
Cheers,
Clara
