McK behavioral questions

I was told that the question for the PEI dimension would be the same one as what's on the website (see beow).  Is this true? or can interviewers ask you anything as long as it's under one of the PEI buckets?

Personal impact
Explain a challenging situation you encountered when working with someone with an opposing opinion to yours.

Entrepreneurial drive
Talk about a time when you had to work to achieve something in a limited period of time that was outside your comfort zone.

Inclusive leadership
Share an example of an instance where you effectively worked with people with different backgrounds.

Hello,

These are the general three characteristics they look for, but there are a vast array of questions that can be asked within each bucket. These are not standard questions that are asked in all behavioral interviews. For instance, inclusive leadership could be “tell me about a time you led a team” or “tell me about a time you navigated a difficult situation in a team environment” or “tell me about a time you disagreed with someone on your team”. I would advise you to read up on common behavioral questions (PrepLounge has a wide range of resources), and prepare your answers more broadly.

These three questions are not set in stone.  But they set the tone. There can be variations. The three themes of PEI are more fixed however.

The actual question may be different, or be the same but in different words.

You would be wise to prepare content for these three at minimum - and other associated questions.

Hi there,

Please be careful. You have grossly oversimplified this and will fail if you proceed with the above view!

Yes, McK looks for these 3 dimensions. However, there are a vast array of questions they can ask.

You need to be prepared for questions regarding leadership, teamwork, taking initiative, challenge, persuasion, conflict, initial failure, proudest moment, biggest achievement, etc. etc. (the list goes on).

Create dynamic stories that can be adjusted based on the question asked.

Hi there,

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, you are right that the information provided is the very core of the three dimensions being asked about in the McKinsey PEI.
  • Still, the variance with regards to what the specific question and the level of detail you will need to present your experiences are pretty high, thus I would advise you to prepare for different ways the three dimensions could be introduced by the interviewer and thus adapt the way you talk about your experiences prepared.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for the McKinsey PEI and case study interviews, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

The overall buckets are the 3 but they can ask different variations of the questions in there. Your stories should be able to answer the different variations of it.

For example

version 1 - Explain a challenging situation you encountered when working with someone with an opposing opinion to yours.

version 2 - Tell me about a time you had a different opinion to others in a room.  (This is about disagreeing with more than just the one person above)

Generally, it's healthy to assume interviewers can ask anything. Some may purposefully try to put you in an uncomfortable situation to see how you react.

I'd encourage you to see these three areas as different lenses of showing leadership. Basically what is expected of you is to tell genuine stories of when you, individually, had an impact that showed you at your best, in a context that was difficult. Basically the interviewer wants to understand your thinking process, what you did and why you did it. They will ask follow-up questions until they have the confidence that your answer is genuine and the example is ready.

If you train with at least two stories for each of the 3 dimensions you should be fine. Try to map them out in a table so you have it visually clear in your mind. That worked wonders for me when I did my interviews.

For McKinsey PEI, the best way to prepare is not to try and solve for the long tail of questions but more to understand what McKinsey is testing in each of the three dimensions. If I was a candidate, I would put myself in the interviewers shoes, and draw out an assessment criteria behind each of the dimensions. That's a great way for you to have a deeper and more thoughtful understanding of what you want to share in each of your stories and a way to evaluate whether your stories are appropriate or not.

Hi!

Interviewers will ask a great variety of questions but they all usually refer to these buckets.
