How to estimate the number of trucks in Germany?

How would you estimate the number of registered commercial trucks in DE?

Tried to approach the question by estimating the number of supermarkets (~30,000) and the number of trucks needed to replenish them every day (1-2 truck loads required per day), which make me come up with 60,000 trucks - I assumed that the replenishment of supermarkets account for only 10% of the overall delivery demand, but even so I only arrive at 600,000 trucks, which is one fifth of the overall official number (official estimate: 3 Mio.).

Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks a lot in advance.

There are about ~600.000 truck drivers in Germany, so your number is actually quite good. You were probably missing the truck fleets, as not every truck is driven everyday.

With this logic you can estimate, that for every driver, there are about 5 trucks. So a company with ten trucks would have two drivers. I don't think this is actually the case, as it seems a bit much, but it would move you closer to the actual number.
