Have you ever face a similar situation at McKinsey?

Dear Community,

I just received an email from McKinsey that they cannot offer me a place at a specific hiring program which I have already applied for based on the roles and office preferences I selected. However, they told me they are impressed by my achievements to date (I have passed the Solve game and as far as I know, I was able to reach all requested objectives ) and will try their best to find a different option at McKinsey that might be of interest to me. They told me they will get back to me with a suggestion until end of June. Did anybody face a similar situation? What does it mean exactly ? Something is wrong with my application? Do you know if it’s the default format of rejection email for everone?  If not, Is it possible that they cannot find any suggestions for me?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

agree with Ken, hard to say without know you or the role. But the same thing happened to me. I applied for a specific role in Germany and BCG offered me better suited role in other country. So it is a good sign!

Good luck

Lucie

Lucie, I just read your blog. Thank you very much for sharing your interesting story and knowledge about experienced hire. And thank you for your reply. I did answer Ken as well about the position and my background. It was for a digital technology associate position. I would definitely have applied for an AI consultant position but I could not find what they call it in Mckinsey (or even if it exist), then I chose the closest position to that one. I have experiences in different industries (about 6-7 years), and I'll be graduating with a PhD soon. I hope they find a better match for me as they did once for you at BCG.

It’s hard to comment without knowing the specific role but it definitely happens for roles where there is a specific headcount (unlike generalist consultants).  It’s a good sign and I would just wait to see what they get back to you with.  Fingers crossed!

Thank you ken for your reply. It was for a digital technology associate position. I don't know if it's a very specific position, I think with new norm of digital transformation, probably not. However, I have working experiences in different industries (Oil and gas, Tourism, Customs and Telecommunication) as business or data analyst, and soon I'll be graduated with a PhD in applied machine learning subjects. Personally, I would have chosen AI consultant but digital technology was the closest position which I have found at Mckinsey.

Apologies for the delayed response. You have a great background which is likely why McKinsey wants to find a more suitable role for you. On top of the digital consultant role, there are a lot of specific roles with fixed headcount across McKinsey Digital. Fingers crossed!

Hello!

Sorry to hear about that, but it´s not a bad outcome. I have heard about similar cases but in US offices (e.g., we cannot consider you for Boston, but we have a shortage in Seattle, wanna join there?)

Cheers,

Clara

Hi - this definitely doesn't sound like a rejection letter.

Without knowing the specifics, it sounds like they have a particular niche hiring program which you are not suitable for, but they believe you might be a great all-round candidate for a regular position or a position in another program.

It sounds like a good sign and definitely worth following up on

Hey there,

You can trust their feedback.

You might have a very strong profile and they want to offer you a position, but the one you applied to does not work out currently due to lack of demand probably.

MBB and others have slowed hiring this year due to the looming recession and everything else that is going on, which leads to less demand and more uncertainty about future demand.

Fingers crossed that this will go ahead positively!

Cheers,

Florian

It is funny. I have received the exact same email today (with the exact same words). It is a default email they sent to everyone they rejected.

I am really sorry

Ah, that's interesting! but still I'm thinking it would be much easier for them to reject us with giving the feedback that what was our flaw, because we have already passed the resume screening and the problem solving game assessment. Let's keep our fingers crossed :D and please let me know if you receive any suggestions by end of June.

Anyone received any news? I am curious if there are among us who actually heard anything
on Jun 29, 2022
We are not going to receive anything because that was a rejection email plain and simple! Mckinsey must be rolling with laughter reading these hopeful comments! That email they sent was just to not hurt our feelings. Instead of straight up telling us they did not want us, they said it in a "sweeter" way. Thats it! Again sorry to everyone.

I have received three different rejection emails today with the exact same wording.. so it looks like it might just be the standard rejection email for the program.. let’s hope I am wrong though!

I got the exact same email. Did you receive any news? We are now 29th of June so very little hope here. They should have sent a standard rejection letter. I really do not get it.

Hi,

I received the same email today. I don’t really know what to think of it. It seems that a regular rejection email would have been easier if they weren’t interested in our profiles. It would be interesting to know if anyone else received a direct rejection email.
