Geographic Location

Hi,

I applied to McKinsey with geographic location preferences as follows: Geneva, Paris, Dubai and Casablanca.

I was called for a phone screening by the Casablanca office - does that mean that my other preferences will be disregarded and I am only considered for the Casablanca office?

Also, when I take the interviews, do the office benchmark you against other candidates that applied to the same office or to the global candidate pool?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hello,
First, welcome to the preplounge platform. Always happy to provide you with feedback on your questions.

I know well the McKinsey Casablanca office so, here are the answers to your questions:
1. Yes, your other preferences will be disregarded (if the ranking you provided was 1. Geneva, 2. paris, 3. Dubai and 4. Casablanca) meaning that if you do not get an offer in the Casablanca office, you would need one year - 18 months to apply again to other offices
2. There is no such thing as global candidate pool benchmark. However, as you are interviewed, you will be "naturally" compared to your peers who are applying for the casablanca office. Be aware that if you are a good fit with them, they will give you an offer, no matter how you are comapred to other candidates. You need to stand out as an individual and not compared to others.

Let me know by PM if you have any questions about the McKinsey Casablanca office and how to prepare best for this office.
Best of luck in your interviews,
Norah

McKinsey Digital / BCG Platinion: Oil & Gas Upstream Technology [PLEASE NOTE: This is a technically difficult case and should only be completed by those coming in as a Technology specialist, i.e. recruiting for McKinsey Digital, BCG Platinion, etc.] Our client is a multinational oil and gas company. While they are vertically integrated and have upstream, midstream, and downstream divisions, they have recently been experiencing competitivity issues in the upstream gas division, which brings in $1B in profits annually. Our client’s upstream division has offices in Australia and Indonesia. Their work is highly dependent on their IT systems, as they have to constantly monitor wells and pipes (pressure, hydrocarbon count, fluid makeup, etc.) The upstream division has two large legacy IT systems that are primarily used for downstream operations but have been modified for upstream purposes. These systems are managed by a central team in the US which is responsible for all IT issues across the business. They triage issues/enhancements and then manage development teams in India and Finland who complete the work.
