I have an offer from Cambridge and HEC Paris MBA.

I'm from South Korea but with German citizenship (born here) and want to work ideally in the UK, Netherlands or the Middle East.

Could anyone bring insight into whether MBB or Tier 2 (including big 4) have a preference here and which school would make more sense?

From initial sight HEC seems to be the better ranked business school/MBA programme but Cambridge with the stronger brand name.

In society overall, cambridge has a better brand, but in business HEC is considered a notch above.

Having said this, Cambridge may be a better option to get a job in the UK.

It's difficult to know which one would be better in your case. There are two things you can do. Some MBA schools report where their graduates went to work (and how many), and that can be a good indication of strength within Consulting.

The other approach is to do a LinkedIn search, filtering for company, school, and location, which should give you an idea on which school is more successful and where.

Thank you for getting back. I have briefly looked at placements etc. but its also slightly skewed as HEC just as larger number of students. Was just hoping to get the opinion of people already in consulting on their reactions if they see Cambridge or HEC Paris on someone's CV.

#1 rated MBB & McKinsey Coach

Enclop,

I've coached candidates from both schools and both are amazing options.

If you want to stay in the UK, Cambridge makes more sense.

As an overall brand, HEC is typically seen as stronger.

I've also put together an article that will help you think through your MBA options.

Best,
Cristian

Hi Cristian, Thank you for getting back. Outside of UK and France, which school would you think is better for Tier 1 and 2 consulting firms or for huge blue chip firms like amazon in general?

Cristian on Apr 29, 2024

I'd say about equal. It depends more on what you do during the MBA, which is something you cannot control for at this point

Hi there,

Congratulations on the MBA offers! In terms of your question:

Q: Could anyone bring insight into whether MBB or Tier 2 have a preference here and which school would make more sense?

I would recommend checking the past performance of the MBA in terms of placement to understand what could work better given your goals.

You can check it as follows:

  1. Go to LinkedIn
  2. Add the universities as "School", one by one (if possible, target the MBA only)
  3. Filter by each MBB/target company as “Current company” for your target geography
  4. Check how many school alumni joined your target firms
  5. Normalize for the size of the MBA intake (if available)

Good luck!

Francesco

If you want a job in the UK Cambridge may be better. That being said HEC probably has higher recruitment into consulting.

If possible I would advise you to try to get into Insead or LBS even if it delays you by a year. Those have much better odds for consulting. Even said at Oxford is slightly better.

Thank you for getting back! I don't really have the option to wait a year so need to decide between the two (i also have interview result from oxford waiting as well). You mentioned Oxford is better? as in better than Cambridge and HEC?

Got it. In my opinion Oxford MBA has a slightly better reputation than judge. But the best is to speak to alumni of these colleges to see what they think

HEC has a strong brand in consulting. Cambridge is your place to go if you want to work in the UK.
