Hi Preplounge Community,

I have a quick question about cool off period for Mckinsey NA. I recently got rejected from McKinsey after a referral and I submitted my application Nov. 2022. However, someone shared with me that I am  actually supposed to be recruiting for on-campus recruiting next June given my profile (currently advanced degree candidate in the US). I was wondering if there is a cool off period given I was rejected during screening phase and applied during the off cycle recruiting?  Someone shared that if I did not make it to the interview stage, there won't be any cool off period, but I would really appreciate your insights!

Thank you!

Hello!

That's accurate! The cool-off period is typically more for people invited to interviews and that don't make it.

Proposed plan:
I would definitely apply at the on-campus recruitment to maximize your chances AND try to network with people from the office before (on or off campus). When you'll have applied for on-campus, notify the people you have met that your application is in! (That way you get noticed more than 1 cv amongst the rest)

Best of success! Let me know if you need any help to prepare!

Hi there,

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • The cool-off period for McKinsey North America varies depending on the recruiting process and the stage at which you were rejected. Generally speaking, if you were rejected during the initial screening phase, there may not be a formal cool-off period. However, it's always a good idea to check with the McKinsey recruiting team to confirm their specific policies and guidelines.
  • It's worth noting that even if there is no formal cool-off period, it's generally good practice to wait a few months before reapplying. This allows you to demonstrate your continued interest in the firm, and to potentially gain more relevant experience or improve your qualifications before reapplying. Additionally, it's worth reaching out to your referral, if you have one, and ask for feedback on your previous application and what you can do to improve your chances for next time.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

There is a cool of period, usually 12 months for internship applications and 24 months for full-time applications.

If you are able to network during the on-campus recruiting and get a strong referral + have significant improvements on your resume, it might be that your application will be considered earlier.

All the best,

Florian

Hi there,

The person telling you that there isn't a cool off period if you didn't actually make it to the interview stage was right.

You could have technically applied again the day after getting rejected. However, that may not be the smartest move since you actually want to let enough time pass and add some meaningful experiences to your resume, so they'll see a more impressive application next time around.

If you're going to apply to an entirely different region or role, however, the above shouldn't be such a concern.

Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!

Yes, you can apply again. Both given that you are pursuing a degree and have on-campus recruiting with its own timeline, and that you did not fail an interview.

Hi there,

You should be ok! It's a different recruiting channel. It might be worth double-checking with the recruiter…it's a great “excuse” to have them put a face to your name.
