Can I sign and hold 2 MBB offers?

MBB Multiple offers

I have recently received offers from two MBB firms. Given that a lot of MBB firms delayed their start dates, is it possible for me to sign both offers just in case one firm decides to delay my start date? Are there any consequences if the two firms somehow talk to each other and find out I signed both offers?

I am an international student, so I can't afford to have a delayed start date due to visa issues.

Hi there,

first of all - congrats! Great job on securing 2 MBB offers.

With regards to your questsions..

  1. Is it possible to sign both offers? Theoretically possible, of course. Is it ethical? different story..
  2. Are there any consequences? Practically, no - would not worry about the firms talking to each other - usually what you mention is not disclosed. Be prepared, however, that you will be burning the bridge with the firm you end up rejecting.

If you want to play safe and have no strong cultural preference, would go with the firm that tends to push back start dates less. Feel free to reach out via DM, if you'd like to get a view on that.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Andi

You can but it will be looked at in poor form and you are denying someone else their place. Ethics aside, it is also a meaningless exercise as most of these firms move in sync. If one firm delays a start date it is extremely the other firm will do the same. In addition, they all deal with international students and can help solve visa issues in ways you may not have thought through using very expensive lawyers.

In short - do the right thing, sign the offer that you are most keen on and have faith that things will work out for the best.

Technically you can, but you shouldn't. Agree with the other coaches here.

Hi there,

Congratulations on the MBB offers! In terms of your questions:

1) Is it possible for me to sign both offers just in case one firm decides to delay my start date?

In theory you can, unless the legislation in your country or the contacts prevent so. However I would not recommend it just for the risk of a delay.

2) Are there any consequences if the two firms somehow talk to each other and find out I signed both offers?

It is unlikely they will do so, but regardless, I would recommend simply picking your favorite one and sticking to it.

The worst case of a delay is most likely not worth the possible issues that might arise signing both offers. Even if they don't find out, you might burn bridges with the company you will reject if you sign an offer and then withdraw.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there!

Theoretically you can.

As in, if you want to minimize the risk on your side it makes sense to do it.

But turning your back on one of the firms after having signed with them is an industry no-no. In some cases they can also blacklist you from applying.

So I would recommend against it if your main reason for doing it is to manage for a postponed starting date.

Sharing with you also two readings you might find useful if you are just starting in consulting:

Best,
Cristian

Very risky game to play which can potentially result in a blacklisting from both firms if they find out (unlikely but you never know especially if the offers are for the same location). Depending on the country, starting a sponsored visa application with two independent firms simultaneously can lead to even more complications. Tread carefully.

Having said that, MBB is very good with keeping their promises and finding satisfactory solutions with these sorts of things so dont worry too much. good luck!

Hello,

Congratulations on getting TWO MBB offers, that's incredibly impressive!

Theoretically you can sign both offers, but that doesn't mean you should. Reneging on a signed job offer reflects poorly on a candidate, so you would be burning a bridge with that firm. And on the off-chance the two firms do somehow find out about this, you may face repercussions (have the offer rescinded, banned from reapplying, etc.).

I fully understand your visa concern (I was also an international student). Instead of signing both offers, I would recommend reaching out to HR at the firm you want to go with and explaining your situation. I suspect they are going to be willing to work with you and give you a start date that works with your visa restrictions.

You can…but you shouldn't.

You'll end up in the blacklist for the one you don't keep your word. This is much more serious than just rejecting their offer.

You should reach out to them and negotiate the start date. Share your concerns. If necessary make them put it in writing, although that wouldn't be necessary.

Note: they will not talk to each other about this.

Hi,

Like others have mentioned - it's probably not the wisest thing to sign both offers and then renege on one.

While the climate is not the best right now, generally MBB will not withdraw a signed offer, at most they will delay it.

And as for whether there is a risk of firms talking to each other - they are not supposed to do so but I have definitely heard of this happening before.

All the best!
