Can I get into McKinsey? If so, which position should I consider applying for?

Hi All,

Thanks for reading my post. I graduated from an established but public 4-year university in 2016 cum laude. I've helped grow a start-up for a couple of years in strategy and marketing as a Marketing Director. Now I work at a small manufacturing business and went from Marketing Director to Director to Internal Operations. I have found I'm really passionate about strategic growth. Once I learned about large-scale consulting, I felt as though I would thoroughly enjoy it. There is a McKinsey location near me and I was considering applying next year after I have finished some personal goals (learning a second language, becoming more proficient in data science, as well as completing some internal structuring at my current company). I will have a little over 4 years of experience under my belt when I apply.

Do you think I have a good chance to get into McKinsey with my background? If so, should I consider a business analyst position or an associate role? What can I be learning to become more well-rounded for the role?

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you

Hi,

your academic and professional career sounds very interesting!!

In general the criteria McKinsey is looking at for business students are the following:
- being among the top 5% in Bachelor or/and Master degree
- type of business school / university
- international academic or professional experience
- type / number of professional experience you have made (already in consulting?)
- any social activities
You can assess for yourself whether this applies to you. However, if you are an exotic (non-business background), then this may vary a bit. This may also vary by country. I can give you perfect insights for McKinsey Germany, if you are interested in.

Your question whether you should apply as a Business Analyst or an Associate can be answered by the following:
1) The naming of these job roles are country-specific: therefore, I would check for your country what kind of background the typical personas have at the stage of a business analyst and an associate.
2) Get a better idea of the requirements for each of these two job profiles and consider for yourself whether you feel already competent enough for an associate position. If so, give it a try! You can justify and prove it!

If you have any further questions, please reach out to me!

All the best
Giulia

Hi there,

it is very difficult to judge your chances without additional information on your exact school, extracurricular activities and accomplishments in your previous job. In general though it seems you have a good profile.

The role you could join depends on the country; in the majority, you could target a Senior Business Analyst or Junior Associate position (1 year before Associate) according to which role is present.

Best,

Francesco

Hi Anonymous,

Your background sounds interesting and assuming you have also a quantifiable track record in what you were doing, you definitely have good chances to be considered at McKinsey.

For the exact position it's impossible to say without knowing much more details, but in my opinion this should be a secondary consideration which you can also easily clarify with your local HR contact (everything else is speculation anyway).

Hope this helps - if so, please be so kind and give it a thumbs-up with the green upvote button below!

Hi,
your CV is totally ready for McK application. About the role you could be considered both as a junior associate and associate. It depends on HR and on wheter you would have a 1 year more to grow as a consultant.

Feel free to text me for some tips about the preparation. I have supported tens of experienced professionals in crafting impactful stories and structuring business cases.

Hope it helps,

Hi there,

You seem like a compelling candidate and you have very strong growth trajectory, experience, and responsibilities!

I think you could probably come in as Associate, but I highly recommend you reach out to HR - it's a great way to get started networking in any case!

Also, do consider going into a more specialist role (i.e. McKinsey Digital) as they would certainly appreciate your skillset.

Hi there,

It's tough to give you an answer without seeing a full CV - however, it seems like your work experience could fit a consultant's profile - and given your work experience, you could qualify for an associate role (entry-level + 2 years)

I hope this helps

Hello,

Your profile seems to be in line with MBB requirements. If you are interested in data science or digital world, you should take a look at McKinsey Digital (or BCG Gamma).
Feel free to send me your cv for a more detailed assessment of your position

Hi,

Your profile is very interesting, I think you could definitely be considered for McKinsey.

Re which position, it depends on the office, in some places, you can easily be considered for an associate role, in others you'd be a junior associate. Considering you have managerial experience though, I would aim for the associate position.

Best,

Réka
