B.B.A (Marketing) graduate with 4.5 years work experience want to get in MBB India.

Hello Everybody,

Hope you all are healthy and safe.

Let me tell you about myself and my situation first.

I am a BBA (Marketing) gradute from India with a total 4.5 years of work experience.

  1. In-house SEO Executive for a IT media house managing all of their websites (2 years).
  2. Started my own business in the education industry and ran it for 2.5 years.

My situation: I have an entrepreneurial mindset and I am keen on learning about problems faced by businesses and how to solve them.

  • I believe management consulting is the way to go here and I am really interested in it too and I am willing to learn whatever it takes.
  • I applied at McKinsey for two positions Business Analyst and Junior Associate. I got a rejection email for the position of Business Analyst within 5 days of applying .
  • I am still waiting for a reponse for the Junior Associate position, it has been 10 days.

There are no other general consulting positions open in other firms and I only want to go in general management consulting.

Now my questions.

Q1) Am I a suitable candidate for a general consulting job at MBB consulting firms?

Q2) How much longer should I wait for a response from McKinsey for the Junior Associate role?

Thank You for reading my long question and I am grateful for your response and any advice that you can give me.

Hi there,

I hope you networked and got a professional review of your resume! If you're really willing to do whatever it takes, you need to dedicate time, energy and resources to optimizing your resume and networking extensively.

Q1) Am I a suitable candidate for a general consulting job at MBB consulting firms?

Sure! You seem fine as a candidate. But I'd need to see your resume to do a full assessment. Ultimately, it doesn't “matter” if you're a strong candidate. You can't change that. What you can change is how good your resume looks and how much you have networked.

Q2) How much longer should I wait for a response from McKinsey for the Junior Associate role?

Forever….

Jokes aside, you don't really have a choice here. All you can do is “wait"!

As you wait, make sure to network with and apply to other firms. Build up your skills and other experiences so as to make your profile stronger.

Hi Anurag,

A bit difficult to give you targetted advice without looking at your full CV. Generally speaking, nothing is impossible and this move can be made with a strong application (CV, cover letter) and most imporantly referrals!

Its not going to be easy if you are not from target schools in India. If you are absolutely conviced that MBB is the place for you, then either get an MBA or try another firm for 2 yrs and then hop to MBB- Deloitte, Accenture Strat etc.

Keep in mind the current economic downturn as well.

All the best.

Hi Anurag,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • From the information you provided, it appears that you are an eligible candidate for MBB. However, please keep in mind that my assessment is based solely on the information you provided and without reviewing your resume.
  • I would advise you to wait at least two weeks before reaching out to the McKinsey recruiter to inquire about the status of your application.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Where did you graduate from? If you went to Stephens/LSR/SRCC or similar then you have a shot otherwise it's going to be difficult. Your best bet is to do an MBA either top 10 global or at IIMs or ISB and then try your luck.

Thank You for responding Udayan.
I did my Bachelor's from Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Bangalore.
If I don't have an MBA then I won't even be called for an interview? Won't my experience amount for something?

Unlikely - In India it's only a very handful of university graduates that get called for interview, unless you have expertise in something they really need expert knowledge on immediately.

Your best bet is to reach out to current MBB employees and ask for feedback on your profile and recommendations for roles. Since you are not from a target school I think it will be quite hard without an MBA but you can always give it a shot.

That is an interesting approach and I will surely try it. If it is not too much trouble then will you be willing to provide feedback on my profile?
