Ambiguous waiting game after McKinsey interviews. What might be happening behind the scenes and what are my chances?

TL;DR:

McKinsey expedited my interviews for an experienced hire role because I have another offer and they're my first choice. I made it past the final round interview and my recruiter even called to share details of what would be in a possible offer to make sure it stacked up with my other offer, but at the last minute, they decided to finish interviewing other active candidates, but said "Hopefully things will work out." So I wasn't rejected, nor accepted, just this ambiguous limbo. It's now three weeks later. What's happening behind the scenes in cases like this? What are my chances?

Longer version:

I completed five rounds of interviews after expediting their process because I have an offer (contract at a F100 bank). Recruiter called before my final round and shared what'd be in their offer if I passed the final round, and my interviewer told me she thought it was a very successful interview. I expected to receive their offer.

One day later, my recruiter emailed that they “couldn't move forward at this point” because they were actively interviewing other candidates, acknowledged knowing that I have another offer, and said "We understand this is not the news you were hoping for, but hopefully things will work out." I responded with empathy, gratitude, respect, and that I'm hopeful to hear their answer soon... and as of today, that email was three weeks ago. Last Wednesday, I reached out to the recruiter via email to reconfirm my interest and ask if they had an updated timeline so I could decide whether or not to push forward. My recruiter responded that Friday, thanked for my continued interest, and they "have a very strong pipeline of candidates in the process...hoping to make a final decision by mid next week." It's now Friday of "next week."

What I imagine is happening is that I did well enough to not be rejected; well enough that there's a reasonable chance they extend an offer if they speak to other candidates and I'm still the best one (or they extend an offer to someone else but they turn it down), but not well enough for them to make an immediate hire decision, as I was expediting their process. If I didn't have a shot or meet the bar, I'd think they'd reject me or recommend that I take the other offer, because they mention knowing that I have another offer in the email.

I know there are a million ways to interpret these sorts of things – and I'm not trying to dwell on it, but is this likely a safe guess of what's happening? What are my chances?

In the meantime, I'm moving forward with offer #2 (I'm not turning down a Fortune 100 contract for a full-time hypothetical), though I may reconsider if McK extends an offer, whether in a day/week/two months. I just hope to hear soon so I go into my new contract ready to learn and engage - with a less ambiguous mindset of my intentions.

Hi there,

Really sorry to hear! This is an unusual situation for you and McKinsey.

In theory you must meet an absolute standard to get an offer, and are therefore not compared to other candidates (this applied to generalist roles and doesn’t apply to very specialized roles). Hence, a somewhat misleading comment by HR. However, you can’t reasonably expect transparency about the process.

Do you have a well defined deadline for getting an answer from McKinsey? Alternative is to sign an renege in a worst case scenario (happens often enough…).

You should feel comfortable to call your recruiter and discuss this, they’re usually very understanding (assuming you’ve waited reasonably long after their last email, something like 2-3 days).

Hope this helps a bit! Best of luck!

Hi there,

I am sorry to hear that - it sounds like you did perform well in the interviews and the HR's behaviour is puzzling and far form courteous.

I have only second-hand experience with McK, but I personally would interpret the phrasing of the response as a “no” and move on with the other offer/apply to other consultancies. Naturally, as you said, if they do extend an offer, then maybe it will be worth considering it. But actively waiting for it would not be productive - but that's just my opinion.

Let's see what the McK folk has to say.

Good luck anyway!

Hello,

I can only imagine that they are taking longer than expected in consolidating the feedback from the intereviewers. This can oftentimes take longer than expected.

Since it is past when they said they would be ready to follow-up with you, I would definately try to email back reiterating that you have an additional offer and that you what to have your alternatives mapped out to make a decision by next week and if you can expect to have a definitive response before then, or something to that effect.

This way you are giving them a hard deadline that you can work around before committing yourself to an offer that you may later turn down.

Best of luck!

Daniel.

Hello!

What a bad situation to be in, I am sorry!

Instead of speculating, I would just kindly follow up -and you can also bridge HR and reach out directly to the people with whom you interviewed, since apparently you had a good vibe with them-.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Thanks so much for responding, that's a really helpful idea! I'll draft a follow up message this weekend for the hiring manager on Monday.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the delays. The truth is, no one knows but HR. This is unusual at McKinsey as they are usually quite fast.

Given you have a hard deadline, I would call (not email) HR to explain your situation – if you call, it is more likely you can convey the message and that they will share what is really going on. This should hopefully provide some clarity.

Best,

Francesco
