Recruiting as a Master’s student too late?

I didn’t get an IB internship during my bachelor’s, but I’m now doing a Master’s in Finance. Do I still have a shot at breaking into a top bank or is it too late?

Hey, don’t worry – it’s definitely not too late! Plenty of people break into investment banking during or after their Master’s, especially if they didn’t secure an IB internship during their Bachelor’s.

I don’t know the specifics of why you didn’t get an internship before – whether it was timing, lack of awareness, or just tough competition – but what matters now is what you do going forward. You still have a solid shot at landing a role if you take the right steps:

  • Step up your networking by reaching out to alumni, attending industry events, and connecting with bankers on LinkedIn. A warm referral can make all the difference.
  • Target the right opportunities by applying for off-cycle internships, smaller firms, and even roles in related fields (e.g., valuation, corporate finance) to build experience.
  • Make sure your financial modeling and interview prep are on point so you stand out when you get the chance to interview.
  • Once you get an invite, be ready to explain why IB, why now, and how your Master’s has positioned you well for the industry.

If you’d like, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to go over why things didn’t work out during your Bachelor’s and help you figure out the best way forward. I’m sure I can give you some useful pointers!

No, it’s definitely not too late! Many banks recruit Master’s students for analyst roles, and a Master’s in Finance can strengthen your profile.

To maximize your chances:

  • Apply for internships – Many full-time analysts are hired from summer programs.
  • Network actively – Connect with alumni and professionals via LinkedIn and finance events.
  • Sharpen technical skills – Be ready for accounting, valuation, and M&A questions.
  • Apply broadly – Consider both bulge bracket and boutique banks.

If you want a tailored strategy and access to a strong network, feel free to reach out so we can discuss your next steps!

A few of my friends were in the same position, and some still landed full-time roles without a summer internship. They mostly started at smaller banks. It’s not easy, but doable.

Hi,
Many people break into top investment banks after completing a Master’s in Finance, even without prior internships. Your advanced skills and deeper knowledge of finance will actually work to your advantage. Focus on networking, leveraging your school’s career services, and attending recruiting events to connect with professionals in the industry. While it may take a bit more effort, you still have a strong shot at landing a role, especially since many banks actively recruit Master’s students for their analyst and associate programs. Stay proactive and focused!

All the best!
