drills for structured communication

I have an issue staying structured especially in comms when I am nervous or overwhelmed (e.g. by chart with too many details, or just pressure of interviews).

Not necessarily referring to layiing out a structure but more just in communications during the case – in answering questions, offering chart insights, offering post-calculation insights, etc.

Any suggestions for drills I can do to fully internalise structured thinking and communication and ensure it stays in place regardless of the situation?

Hi there,

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • I would advise you to practice summarizing information, whether it is a news article, a case study or a conversation. This will help you to identify the most important points and present them in a clear and concise manner.
  • Moreover, I would advise you to practice giving presentations, as this will help you to organize your thoughts, and to communicate them effectively to others.
  • Additionally, you can practice stress management techniques, such as meditation, deep breathing, and visualization, as these can help you to stay calm and focused under pressure.
  • Finally, it is important to remember that the most important thing is to be honest and transparent about your thought process, even if it's not perfectly structured. Interviewers understand that it's not always easy to come up with the perfect answer, and they appreciate the effort and honesty you put into your answers.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Structured communication necessitates structure, so this should be your starting point. Focus on organizing your thoughts in buckets, sequence, etc. before you speak. Visualizing a structure on paper e.g., as an issue tree or matrix is a powerful tool

Next step is structured communication, which in consulting terms means ‘top down’ aka the pyramid principle. My advice for that is to use any given structure and practice communicating it by recording yourself.

Considering your struggles, it's likely that you're speaking too fast and can't keep up with order, resulting in a stream of consciousness. Hence, my #1 tip is to pace yourself and speak slow. This makes your words sounds more deliberate and in control and allows your brain to keep up with your mouth.

If you'd like to explore this deeper, let's connect. Happy to help here!

Best,

Moritz

Every case is a long drill for that… In every single case you have to communicate from the beginning to the and you have to do it in a structured way.

You should practice alone first (doing cases out loud). And then… do case interviews so you can simulate an interview.

Hi there,

Record yourself!

Go onto rocketblocks and when you get each question hit record and pretend you're in case mode. Then, watch it back to see how well you communicated.

I also highly recommend recording yourself during case practice with peers.

Finally, nothing beats a coach. Having a coach “fix” what you're doing wrong and jolt you into conciseness etc. make a huge difference.
