Why do partners, consultants won't encourage or provide referal for people who reach them for a interview referal, despite they being recieved help (referal) from other employees of MBB

I'm not from top tier college but i believe to solve problems better than a fresher from top University, still people like us won't get the opportunities to even showcase and prove ourselves in interview that experience and expertise matters not a University.

Hello Ganesh! I get where you’re coming from (I'm also not from a target school...) and it’s frustrating to feel like you’re not even given the chance to show what you can do! Referrals at MBB aren’t just about talent, they’re about trust because they’re vouching for you personally... that’s why most people refer those they’ve worked with, studied with, or know well.

Also, consultants get flooded with referral requests ... so without an existing connection, it’s hard to stand out. My advice is to focus on building relationships first (maybe engaging with their content on LinkedIn, finding shared school of experiences, adding thoughtful comments to their posts). Once someone knows you and sees your drive, they’re far more likely to put their name behind you.

It’s not easy, but plenty of people from non-traditional backgrounds have done it! The key is persistence, smart networking and a well prepared application. Good luck!!

Non-target expert | Ex-BCG | >200 cases

First, thank you for being open and willing to share — it takes courage to be vulnerable here. I’m from India and also from a non-target school, so I can relate. From a global perspective, I can help you first refine what you’re aiming for, then identify the tools, resources, and approach to get there.

Your question is concise, which is great. That said, some of the background details you’ve included may be more effective if shared selectively. Highlight only what will draw people in, and then use your communication skills and persuasiveness to lead the conversation from there.

Honestly I don't think it has to do with the target school.

Referrals depend on luck and ability.

Luck meaning that you could just be lucky and run into somebody who wants to help and offers it without you asking it. You could also just run into people who don't normally offer referrals or have a very high standard for it. You can only manage for this by talking with more people.

Ability has to do with how you conduct the conversation and also how you bring about the referral without asking for it directly. You might find the guide below useful for this:
