Hi all, I have just been offered an offer from a tier 2 firm, after being unfortunately “managed out” from another firm due to performance issues.
In the interview, the partner mentioned that he may give me a M1 or M2 ranking. My personal concern is that I don't really have a solid “consulting background” (I worked in the industry and did an MBA), and the topic/industry coverage of this office is quite new to me, so I will need time to ramp up.
Before I receive the formal offer letter from HR and have a discussion on the given ranking, I would like to seek your advice on:
1. Is the specific ranking (M1/M2; e.g. Manager Year 1 or Year 2) something that is usually “negotiable”? Or, in practice does the company decide the ranking and there is no space to negotiate?
2. Due to my previous unfortunate experience of being counseled out, I am now in a “risk off” mood. Would the expectation be fundamentally different if I am in the M1 / M2 position?
3. In order to play safe, is it better to aim for a lower ranking (M1), so that I can have some space to ramp up?
Thanks in advance!
