McKinsey Office Placement

Hello! I applied to two roles at McKinsey a couple months back. The first was for the BA position at 3 different US offices, and the second was a Consulting Analyst position in 3 different LATAM offices. From my understanding the consulting analyst position is the entry level position in LATAM, and from there you would progress to BA and so on.

A few weeks back I was selected to move forward on my consulting analyst application. I went to my portal and I saw that my BA application in the US had a "closed" status.

I was contacted by a recruiter a few weeks ago and asked if I would be ok interviewing for an office in LATAM that I didn't list in my 3 rankings, as my listed choices wouldn't be possible. I said yes on the phone, but now I'm rethinking my decision.

My question is would it be possible to make the case to interview for a US office at this point, given that my preferences weren't matched? I'm worried about asking and then jeopardizing the interview offer that I do have. For context, I'm American and don't have any additional passport. Thanks so much.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation from McKinsey!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, I think you may certainly ask about interviewing for a US office, especially given your visa situation.
  • Moreover, however, I do not think asking will change anything in this rather tight market.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Sorry to hear!

My thoughts:

  • Just asking for an interview in the US will not have a negative impact on your current chance in LATAM
  • However, I think a different outcome in the US is unlikely in the current market

All the best,

Florian
