McK thought leadership

McK publishes a lot of material and I was wondering if consultants in the firm are made to work on thought leadership pieces while on projects? Or is this handled by some external team or consultants on the beach?

Hey there,

Rarely at levels below EM.

Below EM, you work on those pieces if

  • you are on the beach (have no current client engagement)
  • the knowledge initiative is important enough to staff an actual team; then it will be your main priority

From EM up, it is expected that you also contribute to such knowledge initiatives while being staffed on client engagements. However, there is usually some wiggle room.

Cheers,

Florian

Projects are quite demanding, there isn't much time for other assignments of they take more than a few hours here and there.

If they need to work on a time consuming assignment they will be staffed as if it was a project, i.e., full time (in this case, it can either be when they finish a project or if they are on the beach).

Hi there,

They are not “forced” to. That said, as you rise up the ranks you are encouraged to contribute to pieces. In particular, if you've worked on a particularly cutting-edge project, you may be “voluntold” to contribute. That said, those pieces generally happen at the end of projects.

Hi there,

Knowledge is coming from 2 sources:

  • Consultants with experience on the top
  • McKinsey Global Institute with a team fully dedicated to develop new knowledge

There is a full support team to produce materials and publish the final content.

Best,

Alberto

McKinsey´s thought leadership as seen by the public is a direct result of project work in many cases.

As a Consultant, you will be assessed regarding these “knowledge contributions” following your project work. This could be an internal document for McKinsey´s own data base or an external article.

However, for external articles, McKinsey employs professional writers, editorial staff, designers, etc. to reduce the burden as much as possible.

It´s a well-oiled machine with a corresponding incentive structure in place that will make you want to work on those things to progress in the firm.
