MBB entry level position chances

Hello,
I am currently finishing an MSc. in Management at a top 30 Business school in the U.S. and would love to go back to my home country to work in consulting. I am graduating with a 3.4 GPA, some extracurriculars related to management consulting, 1 year of work experience not related to consulting, and I have done some networking in my target office, mostly with engagement managers and partners. I know that the chances of getting an offer depend mostly on your performance on the cases presented to you during the interview process, but I would like to know the chances of getting past resume screening and landing the interview. If anyone could provide feedback on this, I would truly appreciate it!

Here are more relevant facts:
- Office country: Peru
- I attended McKinsey events but have not found any BCG events available

Hi there,

I'd say your odds are somewhat low. Top 30 isn't quite what we need (top 15 is). MsC isn't quite what we need (MBA is). And 3.4 GPA isn't quite what we need (3.6+ is).

Now, that's in reference to MBB.

It's also based on odds.

Networking AND strength of resume overall are also huge factors.

If you apply to lot of firms, have a killer resume, and network effectively, you should absolutely be able to get interviews in consultancies. You could get MBB but I also wouldn't hold my breath for it either (i.e. TRY but also cast your net wide!)

Hi there!

High-level, you have an attractive profile. The devil is in the details, however.

You need to write a great CV and cover letter, network to get a referral from that office and apply at the right time to maximise the chances of passing screening.

Have a look at the following guide for some of these principles:

Good luck!

Hi,

you need to tailor your application to what is required in Peru. Does HR in Peru care about the nuances in the US system (e.g. target schools, exact GPA) or is the fact that you have a degree from the US already a differentiating factor compared to applicants?

The best chance to get past the resume screening stage is an internal referral from someone from your target office (or at least country). Ideally this person has a high level of seniority (e.g. partner, senior manager) and has been with the firm for a while. While a referral is still no guarantee, it is probably the best shot at significantly increasing your chances for a first round interview.

Best of luck

Hi there,

I give you 50/50 chances based on your profile. Make sure you network and get good referrals to maximize your chances.

Also consider other consulting firms to diversify risks in case you are not invited. This will also help you to improve your CV and increase your chances in the future.

Best,

Alberto

Hi there,

Q: I would like to know the chances of getting past resume screening and landing the interview

From what you shared, the main issue seems to be the GPA, which is below the usual requirements (in most offices, 3.7 GPA is fine). However, you might be able to compensate for that with referrals from the contacts you have.

You can find more information on referrals below:

Hi,

I'd say that you've got a decent probability of getting an interview invitation if you apply through a referral from one of the managers / partners with whom you've connected.

Also, it heavily depends on the hiring criteria of this particular office and  their current demand for consultants.

Good luck!
Nick
