If HR recommends applying in September, does that mean recruiting is suspended until September?

I wrote to McKinsey’s HR, and they replied with what seemed like a fairly automated (at least partially copy-paste) email, with instructions on how to apply.

It includes the line “Currently, we recommend you submit your application in September”.

Does this mean that if I applied now or over the summer, I’d have no chance at an interview?

Hi there,

It  means you should wait until september for this particular office/region.

It also means you are not being banned for a year and that they will allow you re-apply come September. In terms of the verdict on your exact applications (sound like for summer), then, yes, you will not be interviewed this spring/summer.

Make sure that, prior to applying in the fall, you have networked sufficiently! Please also make sure to apply to lots of other firms.

Hi there,

Q: Does this mean that if I applied now or over the summer, I’d have no chance at an interview?

If HR confirmed you should wait, then it makes sense to wait for that particular office. You risk to be automatically rejected otherwise.

Good luck!

Hi there, it does sound like they don't have any open positions coming in before September. I'd recommend looking at other firms to see what applications you can get in before then, and then apply in September. McKinsey runs a fairly strict hiring cycle of BAs and Associates with very few positions recruited outside of that hiring cycle.

Good luck!

Hi there,

It's indeed rather strange that they said this without providing any sort of explanation.

If I were you, I'd follow-up exactly with your question. It's difficult to know otherwise.

Aside from this, try applying more broadly. Have a look at the following guide I wrote on how to best approach your application strategy for consulting during the current economic times:

How to get a job in consulting during an economic downturn

Best,

McKinsey and almost every other consulting firm has a huge drop in demand from clients. They are currently delaying start dates by up to a year for most people already hired instead of canceling their contracts.

In my experience it makes no sense to try and recruit now, in fact next year might be much better given the current economic climate.

Not necessarily, but they may not review your application or start interviewing until September in any case, if that is what they are saying. I would definitely recommend waiting until September to apply for that particular office.

Not sure it is 0% chances, but they are clearly telling you the chances are significantly lower.
