How much do referrals improve interview chances?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in the recruitment process with one Tier-2 firm (got invited for interview without a referral). I have partner/principal referrals for four others: two MBB firms, one Tier-2 and one boutique. I will be submitting applications to these other firms soon.

I'm wondering how many interview invites could I expect from these 4 firms? I understand they aren’t guarantees, but would appreciate perspectives from those familiar with recruitment.

Hi,

No one can give you a number here, and I would be suspicious of anyone who does. Too much depends on the office, on how many people that intake is taking, and on how your CV reads against the rest of the pile.

What a referral is worth depends almost entirely on your resume. If your resume is very strong, you get the invite anyway. If it is clearly below the bar, you get screened out anyway. The referral matters when you sit somewhere in the middle, and there it can genuinely give you a push.

The most important signal you already have is the Tier-2 invite you got without a referral. Your CV clears a screen on its own.

If you have specific questions, feel free to DM me.

Best,
Franco
