Hi there,

The short answer is no - getting through the interview is mostly where the referral can help. Once you are through the interviews, it's your own performance that on the tests and the case studies that matters, hence it's recommended to start preparing for these interviews well ahead in time

Happy to help you prepare - let me know!

Best,

Oussama

No. Getting a referral guarantees that your CV will get looked at by someone internally, but you're on your own for the rest of the way.

Hey there :)

Once you’re past the CV screen, a referral usually doesn’t matter anymore. The interview rounds at Bain or BCG are fully standardized and performance-driven, especially in ME and UK offices. The referral helps mainly at the entry stage by making sure your application gets reviewed seriously and not lost in the pile. After that, it’s 100% about your performance in case and fit.

No

The referral only helps you get to the interview stage.

After that, it's all about your performance.

Correct — once your CV has already passed the initial screening, a referral generally carries very little to no weight in MBB hiring decisions, especially in the Middle East or UK.

Here’s why:

  1. CV screening is already done: At this stage, the candidate meets the baseline criteria. Referrals mainly help candidates get noticed initially, not once they’re already in the pipeline.
  2. Focus shifts to case performance and fit: At interview stage, your analytical skills, problem-solving, communication, and fit matter far more than who referred you.
  3. Exceptions: Only if you bring extremely rare skills, networks, or industry experience that the firm urgently needs would a referral influence decision. Otherwise, it’s negligible.

Bottom line: After passing CV screening, the quality of your interviews is what really determines your outcome.

Hi there,

Q: Does applying via a referral at an MBB firm (Bain or BCG) carry any weight AFTER getting through the CV screening process?

In theory, a referral should only help to pass the screening and should not have an impact once you reach the interview stage.

Good luck!

Francesco
